Smash Factor numbers seem very low?

Just curious if anyone else is seeing that smash factor seems very low when hitting?

Had a friend hit on my R50.. it was 3 degree's and i had to adjust the temps/altitude to get the distance numbers near to where they should be.. but... he firstly hit PW with 154 yard carry and a smash of 1.08.. then he hit 6 Iron with a 194 yard carry showing a smash of 1.11.

On Trackman these numbers are always mid to high 1.30's?

  • Smash factor is just a ratio of ball speed to club head speed.  Divide the first by the second to get the smash factor.  You should be looking to one of those primary values if there is a discrepancy.

  • Yes i know what it is... swing driver 100mph with a ball speed off 150mph gives you a smash of 1.50.. its just that the same guy its a 6 iron at about 1.37 on trackman.. and in no golf world i know do you hit a 6 iron 194 carry with a smash of 1.11?.. isn't that about 170ish club head speed to get that distance with that smash... sorry.. can't be bothered doing the actual math.. lol.. it just seems the Garmin R50 is under calculating that number?

Also.. by the way... i am an older golfer with a flip and a bit of a hyperextend and on trackman i generally get a smash of about 1.26.. crap i know.. lol.. but the garmin has me at 1.07.

Not a complaint by the way... can't argue with the carry distances we all were getting and also i can say the ball flight in the air.. IE.. fade/draw and pull/push were all displayed very accurately after alignment.

Guess i am just making this point as so many people are saying it is a bit inaccurate and could this be the cause of some incorrect distances?

  • My point was whether the problem of the low smash factor is due to low club head speed or low ball speed?  If there is a fault with the R50 it would be in one (or both) of these two numbers not in the smash factor which, as you clearly understand, is just a ratio.  Please also note the ball speed is measured by the R50 looking at the ball itself and the club head speed by looking at the dot on the club.

  • Think my point is if it is working that out incorrectly what else is it working out incorrectly?.. Anyway.. i think the device is great and only going to get better with firmware/software updates.

But... i also don't think having to ramp up elevation and temperature to get more accurate carry numbers is not correct either.

Also... not sure if you have seen it but there is a video on youtube today showing it against trackman and it being 3-5mph down on club head speed?

Again though.. love mine and it is only going to get better

  • Not sure I would necessarily take Trackman as the gold standard for club head metrics.  It uses radar which, if used indoors can be affected by reflections, etc.  I haven’t seen comparable measurements for the R50 but other high end camera based systems are considered as good as, or better, than Trackman for the club head speed metric (Trackman better on some other metrics, esp outdoors).

  • Spot on about Trackman... if money were no object to me i think i would buy GC Quad over Trackman or any other radar devices.. and TBH... sometimes i look at the 114mph swings on Youtube and also think there is no way you swing that fast too.. lol

The only true test is hit ball and then laser the landing spot if you are after a true carry number to compare against.

Like the old caddies walking out with yardage wheels working distances out for the pros back in the day.

Pro's of today are so spoilt.. lol

  • What was altitude and temp setting?

What was the ball speed and swing speed?

Super high carry for those smash numbers. Power off and back on to see if anything changes. If not Garmin may have you do a factory reset. I would also take pics of the data to show them.

  • Can’t remember all the settings exactly.. going to do a full factory reset and test it again when the weather here gets a bit warmer.. they were 80% range balls and just about 3degrees and and the range has top tracer installed.. so I adjusted elevation and temp to get PW carry in sync.. to be fair once in sync it was pretty spot on.. just the smash that clearly looked wrong.. like I said.. ball flight and shape was pretty spot on.. numerous people were very impressed with it

  • Factory reset the unit last night and these are the results today.. PW  by the way

Its an outdoor net but getting next to no Smash and sometimes lower than club head speed is simply wrong.

Like i said i know i'm a flipper of the club but every other launch monitor i go on gets me around the 120's smash/efficiency  and i know i hit this club around 115-120 even in these temps.. not sure why the carry numbers are not there but not one of thos shots carried over 95 yards

just to show they weren't all bad strikes.. lol

  • The angle of attack numbers are extremely steep. I would check this out with the slo mo camera to verify.

Spin is high too if this is a 48 degree wedge.

it’s not showing carry distance either.
