R50 works on club range but not at my backyard

I got the device couple of days ago.  Tried it at my back yard hitting cage (10x10x10) , every shot was like 10-20 yards short depending on the club.  The numbers were consistent though.

Brought it to my home club range and it workes perfectly fine.  Distance, shot shape , etc were all good.

I had good lighting in my back yard and the distance between the ball and back net is ~ 10 feet.

The case was built by metal which I am not sure if it has anything to do with the inaccurate numbers.

SW version is 3.7.

  • This is normal and I’m glad you did this.

The numbers don’t lie with this machine. Trust me when I say you will get acquainted and then the numbers will come up. It’s just a phenomenon which is posted all over the web.

Anxiety, relaxation, excitement all have something to do with this and I have experienced it.

When you hit at a range you need to save that data. Then when at home you save the data to compare. I can almost guarantee you that when at the range you will see a higher club head speed, ball speed.

Grab your favorite club and hit 25 balls at the range then hit the same club 25 times into a net. How much fun did you have hitting into that net compared to the range?

I have learned from others that it takes time and experience to match the two together. I’m 61 and started playing at 30 so I know how my numbers have changed. When I started hitting on a LM I said BS! I hit it further than this. Then I was humbled by the fact that indoors or cage is different than range time.

With this being said, it is not like this anymore. I can hit a 7 iron 175 at 4500’ elevation indoors but I have to be really warmed up and totally focused. Hitting inside or into a net may or may not get you totally focused.

Take all of this with a grain of salt but 31 years should hold some weight.

  • thanks for the info.  I did have other LMs at home to compare.  My hitting cage is very safe and I could swing as hard as I can.  The ball speed was just lower at the hitting cage (with prov1s) than at the range (callaway range balls).  7 iron was like 25 yards short.  GCquad doesn't have this issue.

  • I have yet to see any video’s of the Garmin R50 being less than accurate on chips, pitches or full shots. Putting is another story but after this last update it has been way better on GSPro.

My unit is exactly what I see in YouTube videos when it comes to accuracy. My ball speed and launch conditions match very close to what Trackman shows with there data. If I was 25 yards short on a ball speed that shouldn’t be 25 yards short I would have sent the machine back immediately..

  • today I brought the unit to our driving range which is real turf play today.  It shows same data as when used in my back yard (~20 yards short).  So far, it only works at the driving range hitting mat. I think I got a false unit am sending it back.

  • I wouldn’t be happy if I saw those results either. People need to post videos of this inaccuracy. I can’t find any video showing major discrepancies with the R50.

  • Please let me know what launch monitor you end up with so I can check it out.
