Is distance issue still not fixed?

Just got my R50, I am a 5hcp and play a lot of golf.  My numbers are 10-30 yards too short with the unit compared to real life (pw going 115 when easily 135-145 on course, solid drives going 250 vs 275-290).  Has garmin still not come up with an answer or solution to this?  I have gone through all the tips etc so Garmin Mod please do not post the typical check list.  If this is not resolved, will need to return the unit.

  • The mat you use can cause ball speed and spin issues. The data is also raw data meaning flat range, no wind etc.

The ball speed on the R50 is really accurate and they have updated spin axis etc.

if you check your ball speed on a pitching wedge you should be able to check it against Trackman data and get close. It shouldn’t be 20 yards off if the launch is say in the 25-30 degree range with spin 8-10k.

You can also hit on a range or course and laser where the ball landed on a good shot then on the R50 adjust the elevation, temp and humidity and start hitting shots until you see numbers you are comfortable with.

i played a course on HTH then went and played the actual course and the R50 is short compared to the actual course. It seems like it doesn’t pick up on elevation changes very well. GSPro seems to do this better.

  • Played a local course last night. Distance was extremely close to what I see on this course. I think the updates have helped. Hitting into greens however isn’t very good at all. You can’t stop the ball even with wedges. The putting is better than it was but work needs to be done with the rough and green firmness. Also, the course I played looks nothing like the real thing. Cactus everywhere and cactus doesn’t grow here. Bushes and cactus in your way on the tee box and you can’t see the fairway. Greens and fairways did slope the correct way however.

  • How do I unsubscribe from this thread (but not others)?

The "To unsubscribe from only this thread, go here." in the emails does not work.

  • Tap the "More" option on the initial post and select "Turn reply notifications off".

  • I am thinking about returning my unit. I have tried different lighting options in my home sim but no matter what I try it seems that my distances are 10 to 20 yards short. I did bring it to a golf fitting that was using a trackman with  a lighting configuration direct from trackman and it seemed to be right on with trackman there.

  • Based on the description of the concern in your comment, the lighting used at your home setup would likely not be the culprit of the concern (unless it's very dark where spacing and ball address is visibly challenged) as the R50 will record shots in bright lighting or low, or no lighting...so as long as you don't have a light source on the ground in front of the cameras...lighting above, floor lamp, or ambient wall mounted type lighting...or lack-thereof, would not affect the R50 from working as-designed like it did during your fitting.

At your home setup, see if you are able to add more width for your swing space...or if you have a short distance allowed for ball flight from the shot location, see if you can add more distance for your ball flight.

I have found with my own home setup (which is a 10x10ft caged net structure) I initially setup my hitting mat a couple feet within the caged net where I only had about 6-7ft of ball flight/1ft of space on driver and woods with swing path forgiveness not hitting the frame. My driver and 3wood shots were a little shorter, and my swing was not quite as relaxed following through and swinging freely. Once I moved the mat back further where the mat no longer resulted my swing path being within the framed edge of the cage. I then had around 10ft of ball flight resulted, and nothing around that would come in contact with my club. My shots were much more typical for my distances at a course, outdoor range, or professional sim setup used a golf shops.

The R50 will work in a confined space...but the "indoor swing syndrome" factor is something to consider due to (potentially a more open-spaced professional sim environment at a shop) - with the club fitting session you mentioned. A smaller hitting setup space may result in an inadvertent or sub-conscience slight 'yip" or hesitation where the club may not be swung as clean or with as much power

  • Took the R50 to a grass range yesterday and had 5 different guys hit shots with it. It was extremely accurate. We used a Bushnell range finder and where balls were landing we could guess what the R50 would display. We had zero wind so it was very fair. Also, when you trap an iron off grass I feel that the ball speed is greater than off a mat.

Some guys thought they hit the driver further than what the R50 was showing but the range finder didn’t lie. They were hitting the ball low on the face and spin numbers were upper 3k. Once they saw this it was an eye opener. Teed the ball a little higher and brought the spin down  and they were sold on accuracy of the unit.

  • Early on, I experienced 10 yard differences throughout the bag. Not anymore. I think the total distance numbers are right where they should be.  In fact, I'll take the averages from a session in the garage and hit it pin high all day on the course.
