Using PIX balls or similar for improvements

Some camera based launch monitors require specially marked balls such as the TaylorMade PIX balls.  I realized these are not *required* but would using them help eliminate some of the clear misreads I seem to be getting?

  • High visibility golf balls as you mentioned are not required, and there is not a specific type of golf ball recommended for use with the Approach R50 to improve shot capture, or the accuracy of the unit.

There is no doubt that certain golf balls will perform better or worse specific to the swing or preference of the user, per the options offered form various manufacturers..so it may be best to choose golf balls that you would use during an actual round of golf at a course.

It is also recommended to switch old golf balls out after extended use, per the amount of wear and tear subjected to golf balls from repeated hits during sim sessions...as ball performance will decrease over time from club impacts to the ball. You can also contact the golf ball manufacturer for their recommendations on the useful life of the ball being used, and when it might be a good idea use new balls.

  • I play Q-Star Tour Divide (the half red, half yellow) balls and have found these result in a substantial % of "no-reads" compared to all-white balls ("could not read ball data").  I expect I am also getting a large % of mis-reads.  So, I have given up on using these with the R50.  I suggest that Garmin changes its recommendation.

  • If your room is dark with no sunlight don’t use colored balls. Unless this new update has fixed this. I was using some yellow balls which worked during the day but not at night. Lots of missed shots.

  • Actually, I have this on an outside deck with good sunlight (too much sometimes actually).  It's no big deal to use white balls but the suggestion to "play what you will play on the course" is off-putting.  Many of the other camera based systems suggest or require special balls.  I don't know why Garmin seems to never acknowledge there may be some (in this case minor) limitations in their device.

  • I guess they should have disclosed color and not just ball. It picks up the yellow range balls with black stripes outside. I’m wondering if it’s the red. I don’t hit the yellow balls at night in my room after fighting with them. No problem during the day.

    maybe the update will help.

  • I´m using the Callaway® Chrome Tour Golf Balls with RPTTm and have 0 misreads.
