Awesome golf why can't it work without hotspot

Hello One of the main reason for us to purchase R50 is we really do not like turning on Wifi all the time. We have junior golfers and would like them to practice with it. One of our main requirement is that we want to limit the Wifi and RF signals around them. As such, it is all in one device, we had hoped that it would not require any other program. But then after using for short time we felt like that Practice and Range courses provided are very limiting and are not really helpful for juniors and we could not configure and there is not much gamification to it. So, we thought ok, we will get Awesome golf subscription, as it has much better Range courses. But it seems like for Awesome golf to work, we need to keep the Wifi on, turn on wifi hotspot on Garmin and then use a laptop to connect to that hotspot. So from not having Wifi signal we are now ending up with 3 wifi and hotspot signals. Questions

1. Are we doing every thing right? Is it possible to use Awesome golf without using hotspot through HDMI connectivity?

2. Do you have any plans on either improving Garmin Range courses that are friendly and challenging to Junior golfers?

3. Do you have any plans to allow native integration with Awesome golf so that we do not need an extra laptop and connect to it via wifi?

If it is a no to each of those 3 questions, I am finding the investment in this device is not really practical for Junior golfers who we want to use this for long terms with continuous wifi signal around them from 3 different sources. Let me know

  • The Approach R50 monitor will connect directly to the Awesome Golf software on your computer as long as both the R50 and your computer are on the same Wi-Fi® network.

The Approach R50 is simply providing the capture data to the Awesome Golf platform, which that data is then used for the features offered on that software platform.

The Awesome Golf platform is not available directly on the actual R50, as the Awesome Golf software requires use of a PC, through their PC specific program software for the R50 connection.

The HDMI connection from the R50 cannot be used to relay the shot data, as the HDMI connection only extends or duplicates the display on the R50 to an external display. When using Awesome Golf, the software for Awesome golf displayed on the PC requires extension of their software to an external display from the PC and settings offered on their platform.

The network connection requirement is also required for other launch monitor platforms outside of Garmin, as the connection requirements are not specific to just the Garmin Approach R50. Other similar products compatible with Awesome Golf require WiFi connection between the unit and their software...or an ethernet cable connection.

For questions or assistance with using Awesome Golf, you can access their support site through the link here: https://www.awesome-golf.com/support/

In terms of future plans for adding additional features to practice sessions...there are not any announcements at this time specific to practice mode updates, as Garmin does not announce updates prior to them becoming available for download...but Garmin is always working on offering improvements and support so in no way is this response to say there will not be new updates or new features coming in the future.

  • There is also a USB C connection on the R50, can you use that to connect to Computer to transfer the data from R50 to Awesome golf? If not, that is disappointing. If the wifi connection is required to play awesome golf than I need to have the wifi at all times-defeats the purpose for me. Also, you did not comment anything on improvements to the R50 Practice range. It is very hard for Juniors to play the rang provided as you cannot really customize anything there. Awesome Golf is good but you need Wifi at all times and an additional laptop. So you see, after spending all that money I am beginning to see the value proposition becoming a problem because it seems like the practice is not sufficient for juniors and the awesome golf needs wifi and another laptop. Am I misunderstanding something here or is that correct

  • The USB-C port on the back of the Approach R50 cannot be used to connect to Awesome Golf. The connection has to be through the same WiFi network on the device you are using the Awesome Golf software on.

The USB-C port on the Approach R50 is to connect the it to a PC or MAC to view the device storage or manually install software updates through the Garmin Express program through the wired connection to the computer.

  • Commenting here because I am also interested in "not" having to use WIFI to connect to Awesome Golf, or GSPRO.

It would be great if Garmin could come out with a way to transmit the Garmin data to the different software (i.e. Awesome Golf, GSPRO) via a wired connection. A wired connection would be much more stable/reliable and would not require the need for WIFI.

If not a wired connection, maybe a Direct-to-PC Dongle. Garmin could create their own dongle that communicates directly to the R50.

  • The Approach R50 through our end at Garmin is designed both through software and hardware on the unit to use the WiFi Hotspot connection when connecting to the 3rd party platform connectors.

My recommendation would be to also pursue options through the 3rd party providers that have open API, like GSPro since they have open source options and a developer community that may be able to design another connection method from the end of GSPro.

The majority of 3rd party launch monitors compatible with the same platforms as the Approach R50 also require Wi-Fi hotspot connection methods with the exception of a a couple that allow a wired connection to the computer the 3rd party software is installed to.

If any new options become available I will be sure to post here in forums as anything becomes released. No announcements at this time.

  • Maybe a stupid question but can you use E6 or Awesome golf etc using the ipad app and WiFi?

  • Yes, if you have the E6 Connect mobile app or the Awesome Golf app installed to your smartphone or iPad...you enter the Connect section on the R50 > Select E6 Connect or Awesome Golf to put the R50 into hotspot mode > Then connect your mobile device to the R50 network hotspot > Open the mobile app for E6 or Awesome Golf > Sign in > Ensure you have the R50 licensed > You can then use the R50 from there once marked ready on the mobile app.

    Note:

    • The Garmin Golf app is only required if using the Approach R10 other platforms > The Approach R50 does not require the Garmin Golf app on your mobile device. The Awesome Golf Assistant app is not required either unless using the Approach R10.
    • The Awesome Golf support site will specify iPad as the compatible mobile device for the iOS version of their app. The Awesome Golf application can also be installed to iPhone on current versions iOS software as with iPad.
    • The E6 Connect mobile app is only available on iOS and is not available for Android. E6 Connect can only be used through iOS or PC platforms.
    • E6 Connect on both iOS and PC allows access to 5 free golf courses for Approach R50 and R10 users.

The Awesome Golf support site instructions can be referenced through the link here: https://assets1.awesome-golf.com/docs/garmin-connection-guide/

The E6 Connect connection steps are outlined below:

    1. Download E6 Connect - The E6 Connect App is available in the Apple App Store.
    2. Follow the in-app instructions - The E6 Connect app will guide you through setting up your Garmin launch monitor and starting a game.
    3. That's It!
  • Thanks for your response, Cody. This is what GSPro came back with.

"Thanks for reaching out to us with your feedback!

We as GSPro unfortunately don't have too much control in how the R50 connects to the PC or our software. Garmin currently only offers the WiFi/Hotspot connection method, but I know that they have received other feedback from users to create a hardwired connection option before.
I unfortunately can't speak to if a hardwired connection is coming for the R50 or not, but I'll certainly send your feedback here directly to the Garmin engineering team we have worked with. "
It appears that many users are interested in this functionality. Looking forward to hearing any updates on this!
