Inconsistent data?

Hi all - Have had the R50 for a few days, and saw some weird results today.  When in Practice mode, and tracking both ball and club data, I was seeing club path and face data that seems to be the opposite of what the ball was doing.

The below pic shows the club data in the red circle, which would indicate a push/fade… whereas the stats in the green circles show a significant left miss (maybe a push/hook).  I’m guessing that the red circle items are club data (derived from the sticker) and the green circle items are derived from the ball movement.  Do I have that right?  And if so, which data is more accurate and is the correct one to trust?

  • I think the L should have been an R.

club path and face to path were equal. Club face was even more open than path which would be right side spin.

club path and face to path started the ball right of target line and club face was open. Slice.

If face to path is less than club path will equal draw or left side spin for right hand golfer.

Watch Tiger Woods open his face at address for a draw and close his face at address for fade. His path is more than his face to path at impact.  For a draw he is closing the face as the club path is going right.

Not sure why your unit showed left spin. Does this happen often?

Did the ball flight show a big push draw?

  • I notice similar problems, according clubdata face is open wrt club path but still a spin to the left which is impossible according law of physics. It seems to me that either the face to club path metric is not correct or spin axis is incorrect

  • If face to path is less than club path you can have some left spin. Usually you would see face to path left and club path right which is a draw. You can have a push draw with enough speed if both are going right but face to path is less.

Face to path going more left than the club. Face is starting to close relative to its path.

Im just going off of how it was explained to me on a Trackman session which resulted in a wake up call that I don’t hit it as far as I thought I did. 61 now which doesn’t  equate to speed. It equates to pain Joy

  • My conclusion is that the club head data was wrong on that swing… probably due to poor lighting in my garage.  However, I was growing concerned that i had a bad unit.

So i took my unit to my club’s indoor bay with a trackman (and good lighting), and was pretty impressed with how consistent with the trackman data it was.  The biggest consistent discrepancy was spin axis, where the Garmin generally showed little more spin and a higher left/right deviation from target.  But ball speed, launch angle, carry and total distance, etc were very much in line.

Conclusion:  My R50 is great… and garage lighting upgrades are underway!

  • The face to club path metric displayed is the angle between club face and  the club path and not club face towards target line. So if face to club path is positive it means the club face is open wrt to club path so we get a spin axis to the right  an not to the left. If face to path is negative you should get a spin axis to the left.

The club face towards target line is in principle the club path+ face to path angle

  • I agree with spin axis being off a bit. I hit draws but a lot of shots are going more left than usual. I need to take to the range and do some comparisons.

i never hit a push draw on the course or range but it happens often with the R50.

  • It’s confusing. Hit a lot of balls today and was scratching my head on a few shots. Now I’m going to be paying closer attention to the three club face metrics.

  • I tried what Bcruick did with improved the ligthing (illumination), I put a spot on the hitting area. That improved ball flight and club data a lot especially with the irons, loks normal now With the driver still sometimes some weird club face data but also data that looks ok. Maybe the weird data (draw with open clubface to club path) could possibly be explained by the gear effect as result of hitting off center.

  • I need to take the unit outside and see what kind of data it gives. I’m seeing some spin axis that isn’t normal for my ball flight on course. I would be really happy if I could hit a push draw the way I can on the R50.
