Crazy putting speed?

Just bought GSPro today and connected it to my R50. Played Lofoten Links. Everything works good, but not the putting. Stimp was set to 10 and when I hit a 30 cm putt on a flat green it goes almost 4-5 meters..? Several times the same result. When I set the stimp to 6 it became a little better, but this is not good enough. Garmin have to solve this.

  • Thank you, and wish you a speedy recovery.
Played Augusta. Stimp 10 and soft greens. Greens are of course very challenging on this particular course, but real fun. 84 strokes from yellow. Happy with that. Had 5 putts on hole 5 :-)
Guess I have to live with that putting speed is fast on my system so far. Formula is still roughly 1 mph per meter. Will try a different mat when I get the chance.
Will check out more from Tekbud.

  • That is a good score from yellow tees. Especially if your putts are screaming! It’s killing me not being able to swing the long clubs. It’s getting better so hopefully I can swing driver soon.

  • Practiced on the front 9 of Norwegian Links. Wow! What a golf course. 9 green was fun with the pin in the back. 10 stimp played like it should for me.

Sanctuary Moon looks like a lot of fun.

  • Yes, Norwegian Links (Lofoten) is spectacular, agree. Love the details with the birds in the sky and the animated butterflies in the high grass. Really nice piece of work. I read  somewhere that the designer would come up with a version of the course with northern lights as well.
Greens are tough, reminds me of Augusta.
    A couple of questions:
When the R50 goes into standby mode in the middle of a round, I can not wake it up and have to restart the system all over again. Have you had problems like this?
And - are all the courses we download in GSPro free?

  • If it goes into stand by mode you have to close the session and hope it reconnects. It doesn’t reconnect all the time and goes into standby to quickly. It’s another bug in the system I’m finding.

All the courses that are in GSPro software are free unless you purchase a Patreon from a designer. These Patreon courses might have better graphics but I haven’t looked further into it.

More users are having issues with putting speed which isn’t good. People on the fence won’t buy the R50 if they are going to be using GSPro in fear of putting issues. HTH isn’t remotely close to being correct in calculating putting for some reason.

i hit a bunch of putts in GSPro this weekend and noticed the exact same feel in the stroke would have 2 mph difference. Especially on a short putt like 5 to 8 feet. The R50 will lose its popularity if these issues aren’t resolved.

  • A million thanks for all the info you provide!
I follow Triplebogey on YouTube, and he has just done another interesting test of the putting issue. I have not watched it properly yet, but I read some comments and found a very interesting one:
"I have a GC3 and the Garmin R50, which I've been comparing. I find that putting on both devices are pretty consistent on GS Pro. For both devices, I place the ball toward the back of the hitting box to maximize reading time. I played courses on GS Pro that I've played in real life: Pasatiempo, Pebble Beach, and Cordevalle. I found the putting experiences to be pretty realistic in terms of distance and direction. Would be interested in your findings placing the ball at the right most tip of the hitting box for the Garmin R50."
I will test this first thing in the morning! If you have the chance of testing before I do, please give me some feedback.

  • I’m going to test setting the ball in that far corner every time.  I really don’t think it’s going to help in HTH but it might in GSPro.

Triplebogey has the ball set in the same spot every time so maybe with the R50 it could be better to have the ball setting in that far corner.

Garmin should be able to tell us if those cameras make a difference in putting when placed in that location. Longer read time etc…

  • GSPro putting.

Short putts are off and so far inconsistent. It didn’t matter from back corner or upfront. I also put a piece of cardboard down and putted off of that. The speed was the same either way but I could tell that the ball was traveling faster on the cardboard yet it wasn’t showing this. It has to be measuring club speed and then calculating. It makes sense since you are putting at a certain stimp.

A 5’ putt can go 9’ easily and then 3’ the next putt.

I can roll a 10’ putt right to 10’ pretty consistently. Maybe it picks up the club easier at this speed.

In GSPro on course range you have holes that are perfectly straight and I have yet to hit a straight 20’ putt and have it drop. If I move the aim point right or left off the flag they will go in. I can make a 20’ putt with 2.5 foot of break but not a straight 20 footer. Try this and tell me if it is different on your unit.

I also think spin axis on full shots is exaggerated a bit..

  • Did lots of testing today and found out some interesting stuff.

Placing the ball in the far corner did not have any effect, just like you experienced, so I painted a circle on my mat to put the ball at exactly the same spot over and over again.

With regards to direction/HLA I do not have any issues. When I play outdoors I have learned to live with that my putting stroke takes the ball a little to the left most of the time and the R50 is spot on here – I also get the final confirmation from the instant slowmotion from the camera which clearly shows what I do on impact. I find the camera very useful on this unit.

My numbers on my mat with a lot of friction (guess the stimp on this mat is about 4 or 5):

    4,6 meters/15,1 feet – 5,3 ball speed – no spin
    4,4 meters/14,4 feet – 5,4 ball speed – 32,2 spin axix – 86 total spin
    4,3 meters/14,1 feet – 5,0 ball speed – minus 28,2 spin axis – 61 total spin
    3,0 meters/9,8 feet – 4,1 ball speed – 53,6 spin axis – 76 total spin
    2,9 meters/9,5 feet – 4,0 ball speed – no spin
    6,3 meters/20,6 feet – 6,4 ball speed – 40,7 spin axis – 132 total spin
    6,3 meters/20,6 feet – 6,4 ball speed – 64,1spin axis – 117 total spin
    6,8 meters/22,3 feet – 6,6 ball speed – no spin
    6,1 meters/20,0 feet – 6,3 ball speed – minus 14,2 spin axis – 77 total spin
    2,3 meters/7,5 feet – 3,5 ball speed – no spin
    2,7 meters/8,9 feet – 3,9 ball speed – 51,7 spin axis – 48 total spin

I do not understand the spin numbers. I have never given any attention to it with regards to putting. Can you explain what you see here, both in length, speed and spin?

Then I put a PVC tarpaulin on the floor. Earlier I used this material as a screen because it is very strong and it also gives a really nice a crystal clear image from the projector. The front side of this material is very smooth while the back side has very small bumps that gives just a little bit of friction. Guess the stimp on this is about 13.
My screen is 2,7 meters from the ball and my goal here was to physically putt hat length on this surface. Have a look at these numbers when I putted on this PVC tarpaulin:

    2,6 meters/8,53 feet – 3,5 ball speed – no spin
    2,8 meters/9,19 feet – 3,6 ball speed – no spin
    2,4 meters/7,87 feet – 3,3 ball speed – no spin
    2,6 meters/8,53 feet – 3,4 ball speed – no spin
    2,6 meters/8,53 feet – 3,5 ball speed – no spin

I am not sure if it is supposed to be spin here, but I enjoyed actually putting the same length on the floor and get the numbers from the sim. What do you make of this?

Overall I think I am getting more and more used to the putting on the R50 and GSPro.

Finally I found that practicing on the greens on the courses reads the very short putts very well compared to practicing on the practice green where I often get noreads on the very short ones. This is a little strange.

Testing continues, and look forward to your feedback.

  • Great detail here! They are basically the numbers I see which for me is accurate.

i wasn’t as ambitious to create something like this because i just wanted to see consistent numbers which I did for the most part. It was the 5 to 6 foot range that was an issue on the practice green. Now I will test on Augusta and see how the short putts fair. Right now I think I would play with 6’ gimmie range. I think SGT plays at 4’ gimmie but that might be for tips tour. I don’t know that I would ever get involved with online play or not.

I’m getting used to the putting in GSPro as well and have very few 5 to 6 foot putts but when you have a downhill breaking putt of 10’ you want to know you can hit it 5’ and let the slope and break take care of the rest.

I will record some data like you did and post. I’m putting off a Fiberbuilt mat which isn’t the best for putting. I need to find something to throw down on the mat that doesn’t move and is smooth. Not that easy to do with this mat.
