Garmin R50

I got my R50 in yesterday. Started with driving range mode just to get a feel for it. Hit about 25-30 shots with an 8 iron. My normal yardage would be 160ish and I had consistent flights of 105-110 which is way off my norms. I hit on the range and launch monitors often and know my yardages fairly close. Any idea why its so different? What can I do to get it right?

  • I've seen many of these posts about distance--and they all seem to be from indoor users. I've never used my R50 indoors, only outdoors on the range. I can attest that the R50 distance measurements on my outdoor range shots are accurate. It may be something related to the indoor setup that is causing the short distance measurements.

    1. You only need to swing any club freely and the R50 will see it FAST! I mean fast! It’s ridiculous just how fast it sees the ball!
  • Im having similar issues. The strangest part though is that I my clubs are all short except my PW. It tends to read way long. A 9oclock shot usually results in a 60 yard carry but on the R50 its in the 90 yard range. 95yards is usually where a full swing with my pw gets me. So thats long but my 9-5 irons all go way short. I usually carry my 7iron about 145 but its going about 120 on the r50. Driver is short too. I can carry over 250 but I have never got it past 220 with the R50. Ive noticed that with my black clubs 5i, 5h, 3w and driver the recordings seem off. Maybe the camera cant see the black clubs as well? idk

My lighting is good, My hitting area is good(divot mat) and I have plenty of room to swing. I do the calibration too but I cant believe you have to do it every time, It just seems inconsistent. I thing the measurement of right to left is extreme. I'm wondering if its a software issue that will be corrected or if its already performing at its best. Im going to keep trying to get it to work better or see if I can get used to it

  • Same. I've sent video and diagnostics to Garmin as requested. It bothers me that every person who reports this problem is told "you are the first to have this issue" when the forums prove otherwise.

  • I contacted Garmin support about the same issue. They recommended that I return my unit if possible. I did and picked up a second unit. Same issue. My R10 and R50 will measure launch angle withing .5 degree. Exact same ball speed. My R10 will show a carry of 240 with my driver and my R50 will show 210 max. Often times it will randomly show 175 carry. How is that possible? I don't have faith in this unit and Garmin support doesn't seem to acknowledge the problem saying it is something they can fix. It seems to be a software issue since the measured metrics - ball speed, launch angle, spin, etc. - are matching what the R10 is measuring. And yes I have played around with settings and placement, etc. BTW, you know there is an issue when I use the setting for my location and it shows that I am 245 below sea level when I live in Houston. I'm returning this unit and giving up on the R50.
