Garmin R50

I got my R50 in yesterday. Started with driving range mode just to get a feel for it. Hit about 25-30 shots with an 8 iron. My normal yardage would be 160ish and I had consistent flights of 105-110 which is way off my norms. I hit on the range and launch monitors often and know my yardages fairly close. Any idea why its so different? What can I do to get it right?

  • What was your captured swing speed? Sounds a lot like my issue, my unit isn’t capturing swing speed correctly. I’ve tested it side by side against another LM

  • I have had the exact same problem.  Device works great but distances for all clubs are way off.  Did you contact Garmin yet.  I plan to, but what a pain, and so disappointing for a new toy!

  • Some suggestions to consider when setting up, if you have not already:

    • Ensure the spacing allows for 8ft of ball flight from the shot location to the target location where the ball is being hit into.
    • When using practice mode, before selecting Start Session, use the "Target Alignment" feature from the Session Settings menu to align the R50 using two golf balls.
    • Also check the "Ball Flight Conditions" section of the Session Settings menu prior to starting Practice mode to ensure elevation, relative humidity, and temperature are all set for the conditions you are wanting during the session.

Review the impact video showing the playback of the club face to see the actual footage at of what occurred with the club face and the ball as well.

If some shots seem to be recording correctly and you feel like others are not being recorded correctly...cross reference the metrics recorded from a shot you feel did record correctly compared to shots you feel are recording shorter.

Contacting Garmin Support should be the next step if you continue to have concerns or any questions regarding the R50 so an expert can get more information from you to determine appropriate solutions.

  • Ensure the spacing allows for 8ft of ball flight from the shot location to the target location where the ball is being hit into.

I'm curious why this is necessary. The Garmin R50 is an optical unit using three cameras not a radar system that tracks the flight in the air, right? If it is camera based, like the Foresight GC3, all it should need is view of the ball in front of it. The GC3 can be used with no issues hitting into a net just 2 feet in front if you if you wanted.

The only reason I can think of that it needs 8 feet is if it is some sort of hybrid system of both optical and radar. This would be really cool, but maybe a suggestion would be that during setup you select how far the distance is from the R50 to the net/screen. If less than 8 feet perhaps the algorithm changes to use only the camera data and not the radar data.

  • I was wondering about this myself. It’s a photometric unit so distance to net bar safety should be irrelevant. Doppler units need to be placed behind the ball not beside.

  • I’m going to try their suggestions first but from what I’m reading it hasn’t helped others.

  • 8 ft from Impact Screen: I am about to buy, but would definitely like to understand first if that distance is really necessary...

  • 8’ is not necessary for capturing the data. If you have enough room to swing a club the R50 captures the data. I hit wedges then 7 iron very close to my net and it picked up every shot as though I was at my 9’ normal hitting area. As long as you can’t hit the net with the club then you have room.

I really hope everyone gets these distance issues figured out because the R50 is a step forward in technology. Right out of the box you have a decent sim experience then if you really want to move up the ladder you add a computer and GSPro. You just need a good wifi signal for the R50 and your computer locks onto the R50 hotspot.

  • The spacing suggestion is more to allow enough space for swing capture from the back swing > impact with the ball > and follow through of the full shot.

This also is ideal for allowing enough space to putt if using Home Tee Hero. The spacing needed for capturing the shot should be sufficient for the full length of the shot by the user and club being used.

The suggestion is not based on any radar design features, as the unit does not use radar to capture the swing.
