External Monitor always starts in Overhead View

Whenever I start a practice session the external monitor starts in Overhead view.  I can change to ground level view by going to the external display menu and toggling the mirror display option on and off.  Is there any way to get the default external view to start with the ground level view rather than the overhead view?  Thinking I'm missing a setting somewhere, but I don't know where it is.

  • I've found the same actually, I only realised the mirror brings back the correct view today.

  • Agreed.  This is a really bad problem.  Map View really has two views: overhead and ground level.  But I can't figure out how to reliably choose one vs the other.  The R50 seems to pick one or the two for me, and usually not the one I want.  Toggling mirror display on/off helps sometimes, but not all the time.  This must be a simple software fix.  Please please fix this.

  • The following display behaviors will occur as outlined below per the current design of the Approach R50:

When starting a practice session, the R50 display will resume the previous display view set that was displaying from the previous session.

Opening practice mode prior to connecting an external display > Setting the field of view to first person > Then connect an external display...the unit will switch the view on the R50 display to overhead view as soon as the HDMI cable is connected.

After connecting the HDMI external display, tapping the menu icon in the lower left > Then selecting "Mirror R50 Display" will allow revert the field of view back to first person view for the driving range graphic.

If you start the practice session without an HDMI cable connected to the R50, then have first person field of view set for the display graphic...connecting an external display should result in the overhead view then displaying on the R50...and the external display showing the first person view for the driving range graphic.

Ensure the R50 display settings for either "External Display" or  "R50 Display" modes have the map icon box selected to show the graphic of the driving range...otherwise other modes or multiple views will display during the session.

  • This is still a major issue and your explanation is not correct. I just got my R50 and have it updated to the latest firmware. There are two major issues:

    1. When not connected to an external display, the Map view often doesn't show the button in the top right corner to switch between player view and overhead view. When it does show, pressing it does nothing. I have a video recording of it as well if you can tell me how I can send it to Garmin to show the issue is a major one. Right now on my R50 I'm completely unable to switch to player mode

    2. When I am connected to an external display, the unit does not remember the last setting you had for map view (whether you had it in overhead view or player view). Instead it always defaults to overhead view and there is no way to change it to player view. The only workaround I have found is you have to turn on mirror mode, then turn off mirror mode, and then it finally loads with player view because that was the correct view since it was the last view used.

  • 100% agree, quite tiering to read Garmin-Cody standard answers - the unit doesnt remember anything and just at random point it is at top down view.

  • I confirm that, the external display always starts with an overhead view. It has to be toggled on and off to show the normal view. Very annoying.
