R50 shots going short and always left, tested against 3 other monitors and they all said that I was hitting my shots straight, but the R50 always goes 20 yards left, and 20 yards short even with a PW, Abad unit or something wrong with the working out?

I set up the R50 along side the R10, Rapsodo and mevo+, the results are worrying.

All 3 of the other monitors were within 2 yards for distance, and left to right dispersion, even when tried with Awesome golf.

But according to the R50, I'm hitting my PW 20 yards short compared to the other 3, and with Driver 40 yard's less.

I have tried altering the ball position but it doesn't change the shot shape.

This will be returned for a refund as it seems your own R10 and the cheaper Rapsodo and Mevo+ all seem to be correct and the R50 miles off.

What is going on with this unit, the other 3 can't be wrong as they distances match my shots on the course.

  • Is this possibly a left/right alignment issue?  IOW, you are hitting them straight but the unit thinks you are lined up to the left. The unit does have a “shot tracer” option (but this doesn’t work if connected to an external monitor) that can show you shot shape.  If the shot shape shows a draw and your other golf monitors do not then this may be a real problem.  On the other hand, if the R50 shows a mostly straight shot but just to the left, this suggests an alignment problem.

it would easier to diagnose if they showed a “3,000 foot look down” perspective that showed the curve of the shot because otherwise you have to infer that from the ball/club data.

  • On all 3 other monitors my ball is going 7 yards to the right but straight as a dye. There was 1 yrd difference in dispersion between the R10, rapsodo and the mevo plus. The yardage on all 3 were again within 1 yrd, 2 at most, all saying 135 yards for my PW which I know on a well hit shot that's my distance, on the same shot on the R50, the shot went left 20 yards and fell 21 yards short!! I tried the alignment settings and took it as far left and right as I could and it didn't really make a difference. With the driver its worse, I the sliced a ball 25 yards right and again all 3 monitors picked it up correctly, but on the R50 it said that I'd hit it with a baby draw and it finished 15 yrd left of centre, with a distance of 221 yards, according to the other 3 it went 262 yrds, that's 40 yrs difference, I have seen at least 5 people on this forum complaining about the same thing, not good considering the r10 is reading the same as my 2k Mevo +, but the 4.3k R50 can't match it? very poor indeed.

Golf swing systems are taking it back tomorrow to see if it can be adjusted, I don't know if I'm happy about that as I don't want it played with to maybe give false results, if it's inaccurate for half the people then they should, d recall all units and test all of them to find out what is wrong?

    • I’m having the same issue with being about 20 yards short. Left to right alignment seems okay.  I have not compared side by side with another unit but play on a trackman often and have distance pretty dialed in. I may be returning as well.
  • My shots are coming up about 20 yards short as well. I haven’t compared side by side with another unit but play often on a trackman and have distances pretty dialed in. It is frustrating.

  • Having the same issue with my shots being short. Hope Garmin fixes this!

  • Note that the design and setup requirements are different between the Approach R50 and the Approach R10. If you are comparing metrics recorded between two Garmin launch monitors, the information and use surrounding the your sessions between both can be discussed...with gathering more information from you to provide an adequate solution for the concern with the R50.

Please note all the following vs assuming the device is not working properly:

    • Confirm all of the recommendations outlined on the Tips for Approach R50 Placement Garmin Support page have been followed
    • Certain objects, coatings, and surfaces that are reflective may cause interference.
    • Everyone has a unique setup and environment the device is being used in. The metrics recorded from each shots help provide a full picture as well if the setup environment is not interfering.
    • Garmin must gather information directly from you specific to your use-case to escalate any actual issues to our quality & engineering team.
    • If you have considered the recommendations published on the support site for the R50 and still have a concern with the accuracy, please contact Garmin so more info can be gathered to better determine what may be causing the concern.
    • Communicate what mode you are using the R50. Are you using driving range...Home Tee Hero...Awesome Golf....GSPro. These are all relevant as the the information and the source of a solution to be determined through.
  • Having the issue with the shots reading short - with the wedges and 9 iron its around 15 yards out - as you go up the clubs it gets worse up to 40 to 50 yards out. Compared to the mevo - the swing speed is at least 10 mph down. The spin rate is also always lower on the Garmin. Out of around 50 shots the Garmin didnt get to within 5 yards carry distance once. Only reading that compared well between two units everytime was ball speed - was within 4mph everytime (Garmin always lower)

  • This is my exact issue with my unit also

  • Hit a bunch of shots tonight. Both on Awesome golf and Garmin range. Didn’t open GSPro tonight.

Carry distances are shorter in Garmin practice range. Awesome golf resembles more of what I see on the course.

Played on GSPro last night and again my numbers seemed very accurate.

I will need to do some more investigating with this but it does seem the R50 driving range shows shots coming up shorter.

  • I think launch angle might be off compared to Awesome golf and GSPro. It seems lower on R50.

This would cause shorter carry for sure. Especially with longer clubs and not PGA tour speed. I hit my driver fairly high a lot of times and am questioning the launch conditions on the R50. If you are swinging at 110 mph with 2300 spin you might want that lower launch whereas on GSPro you might see a higher launch.

Comparing on Trackman with a 95 mph driver swing speed would be an interesting test.. 2 degrees difference would be huge!

More real testing to be done but this is what I’m seeing at a glance.
