Garmin R50 Home Tee Hero vs. GSPro Putting

Had my first day with the R50. Used it for about 5 hours testing play vs. GSPro. My primary issue is HTH doesn't appear to actually change the putting speed based on green stimp setting. I tried various values between 9 and 12 and all are very slow, maybe 8 stimp equivalent.

I switched over to GSPro, which I think takes raw data from the R50 and does its own computations and it is much more realistic at different green speeds.

I don't know if this is a bug in HTH or if it doesn't allow you to change stimp during a round, but it would be nice to know how to actually change green speeds.

  • I haven’t played very much on HTH but when I did I thought 10 on the stimp was fairly fast. I set it to 9 and it seemed to slow it down. I need to play more but it’s been hard for me to break away from all the data which to me seems pretty spot on. When warming up on a real range I tend to pull wedges a bit and this is what I noticed right away. My AoA number was -1.2 to -1.5 and now it’s -3.5 to 5 on wedges and ball is going where I’m looking for the most part.

Are you having any issues with GSpro  connected to R50?

  • GSPro has been great. It's literally twice as fast on the greens as HTH.

I've got a putting surface that's pretty fast. I can't say the specific stimp but I'd say it's 10-11 based on GSPro.

When I putt using HTH and have an 8' putt, If I hit a putt that rolls 8' on the real surface, HTH only shows it as a 5-6' putt and I have to hit it like it's a 12-14' putt for it to get to the hole in HTH. With GSPro, the same putt goes flying past the hole.

This is regardless of the HTH putting speed setting which seems to make zero difference.

  • Going to pull the trigger on GSPro. Awesome Golf loads pretty fast and has some features I like but I’m ready for way better graphics.

The R50 still feels very accurate with shot shape and club data. Going to play a bit with the putting again but when I played a few holes on a course I know well 10 stimp seemed quick to me. I will have to play around with it some more. Just been banging balls and looking at the data for the most part.

Really wish you could pick some holes you want to play on HTH. Plus add yardage for each tee box.

  • Bought GSpro  tonight and it worked for a bit on the range and looked fantastic. Then it started to disconnect constantly. Can’t figure it out just yet. Speed checked wifi and I’m getting about 200 down and up. I have fiber optic which is fast. Standing next to the router in another room hits 700.

    • Any suggestions?
  • I've had that happen a couple of times too. Had to reconnect. Something about the wi-fi between the computer and R50 seems flaky.

  • Worked at first startup and didn’t disconnect. Then nothing but disconnects. My router is on the other side of the house about 50’ straight through the walls. Ping speed as I sit is 265 dwn and up. When I connect I see it drops to 50 ish. Work to do here!

Going to get in touch with GSpro.

  • Would be interested what you find out. I am having the same problem. I can connect the R50 easily but it will disconnect  GSPro session after only a mins or so.

  • Make sure GSPro is connected through Garmin R50 hotspot.

R50 will be connected to your homes WiFi then when you open GSPro on your computer you want it to find the hotspot connection. Need to have a pretty strong wifi connection.

GSPro can’t connect to the computers wifi then to the hotspot. It will constantly disconnect. Do not have your computer connect automatically to the home wifi signal. Once GSPro connects through the hotspot you might be able to connect your computer to the home wifi but I haven’t tried this yet and don’t really need to.

You are not going to be very happy with the constant missed shots and putts that going flying off the green at times. Very frustrating that Garmin did not test thoroughly before going to market with this ever so popular 3rd party software. Lots of work to be done here!

With that being said I have not had a missed shot on HTH or in Practice mode. Awesome Golf app has not missed a shot yet either. Ball data for me has been incredibly accurate at my altitude. If I set it to my location and it’s 30 degrees outside the ball doesn’t fly as high and lands shorter than if I set it to 75 degrees and 20% humidity. I haven’t tried 95 degrees with 40% humidity setting yet.

Played Whispering Pines on GSPro in 4K and the graphics were amazing. Super fun course even though there were issues along the way.

  • An update on putting - now it seems like GSPro is having trouble with putting speed! I don't know if the R50 is just bad at tracking slow ball speeds or what, but it seems particularly bad at those critical putts in the 3-8 foot range. For example, I hit a putt that rolls out 8' on my stimp 10-11 mat. In GSPro set to Stimp 8, it rolls out 12'. In HTH, it goes about 5-6'.

Then, if I try to compensate and hit a short putt, say rolling out 5' IRL, now it only goes 2-3' in GSPro or HTH. To me, this says that the R50 may be reporting bad numbers for putting.

I'm going to try some controlled tests, using a high speed camera and a yardstick to compute the actual ball speed so I can compare that with what the R50 reports.

  • GSPro and Garmin are working together to get the missed shots and putting fixed.

Once GSPro and R50 are locked in through the hotspot I don’t get disconnects. When I first turn it on and think it’s locked in it will disconnect then re-connects and holds.

I use ultra settings and send to a 65” 4k tv. My computer has the RTX 4060 and the Graphics are amazing.

i like that you can have the computer right next to you connected wirelessly to the R50!

Then there is the fact you just turn on R50 and within a minute you are hitting balls and getting very accurate data with a slo-mo camera on one side of the screen to back up the strike you just made!
