Garmin R50 Accuracy

Hello Garmin Team,

do you have a specification document on the accuracy of the R50.
I woudl be interested which deviations in degrees we have to expect for club data as well as the deviation for ball data.

Thank you!

  • Not sure this thing is reading my shots correctly. Consistently 15+ yds shorter than it should be. Just using in garage. Will take to the range and confirm with rangefinder. Is there a way of calibrating? Really want this to be accurate I love everything else about it

  • I just opened mine today, tried in the garage and had the same issues. The carry distances all seemed about 10-15% shorter than what I know I hit my clubs from using other high end simulation software and from just being out on the range and course. Not that I hit every ball perfectly by any means, but I generally have a good idea of my club gapping and these were all off (and increasingly off with the longer each club got).  Hoping this is just a firmware issue that’s calculating things wrong but would love some guidance.

  • I have the same problem.  My club speed, ball speed, and carry distances are very low on the Garmin.  Also, the peak height is 30 to 40% too low.  My PW should carry 125-130 but it only carries 110-115 yards on the R50.  The peak height on my PW should be around 95 feet.  The highest I have ever hit a ball on the Garmin with my PW is 60 feet high.  It typically reads a peak height around 50 feet.  The launch angles measure correctly and spin rates seem close most of the time, but the initial velocity (ball speed) is way too low.  This is true for every club.  The longer the club, the worse the Garmin seems to read ball metrics.  I hit a solid driver with 89 mph swing speed (which is at least 6 mph too low for my average) with a 13 degree launch angle and a perfect smash factor of 1.50 and the ball only went 42 feet high!!! It only carried 185 yards before running out to 255.  The spin rate should have been around 2500 rpm but this time it only read 1400 rpm.  That ball should go 90-100 feet high and carry at least 240 with a 95 mph swing speed.  The Garmin R50 just reads my club speed, ball speed, peak height, and carry distances way too low and short.

I took some clubs to a different launch monitor at Play it Again Sports that I used throughout the season on bad weather days because it measures my ball flights nearly identical to how I hit the ball outside.  The numbers were back to normal.  My carry distances and peak heights for my Pw, 9i, 8i, and 7i were spot on.  My driver swing speed was between 94-97 mph.  When I came back to the R50 I was carrying my irons 15 yards short and the apex height was peaking around 30-40% lower again.  Club head speeds were reading 5-10 mph slower.

I got some black 3D printed plastic tees in today to try on my Garmin.  The Garmin has no trouble picking up the ball on these tees. I hit my 6 iron which should carry 170 and launch at 16-18 degrees.  I hit one perfectly and the Garmin read a 75 mph swing speed (I swing my 9 iron at 80 mph typically), the ball launched at 18.5 degrees with 4000 (probably around 1000 rpm too low) backspin and carried 155 yards at 70 feet high then rolled out to 165 yards.  That should have carried 170-175 and gone at least 90 feet high.

I have concluded that the club head speed and ball speed metrics are reading way too low.  Also, whatever equation is programmed in to calculate peak height and carry distance is incorrect.  I hope this can be adjusted with a software update because the R50 has some serious potential.  My club metrics are reading great which will help me tremendously over the Winter.  UnfortunateIy, can't use this for any other purpose until the ball metrics are corrected and they need to be corrected before my 30 day return policy expires.

  • Yes very disappointing. Would like to hear back from garmin on this. I will take to compare with a trackman on Sunday to confirm what I already know. I will be returning unfortunately since it is useless if it it is this inaccurate

  • My numbers are dead on accurate at my altitude, humidity level and temperature.

You can find tons of info online about ball speed with different clubs and get a good idea of what your numbers should be.

send a pic of your tiles on the R50 with a good 8 iron shot.

  • I’m having the exact same issues. Normally I hit my clubs about 100ft, can’t get above 55/60 in the unit.

Club speed and ball speed are miles off. Launch conditions a led spin look accurate. Very disappointing

  • PGA tour hits around 90’ height.

    LPGA tour around 75’ height

You guys that are having issues need to post on other golf forums and see if you can get more info..

  • Same with mine, I have the r10, Rapsodo and a mevo plus and they are all within 2 yards of each other, also with driver the R50 is 30 to 40 yards short and always goes right. I had the mevo+ and the R10 working together and even with a PW it was going 20 yards short and 20 yards left compared to the other 3 monitors, mine is going back if its that far off compared to much cheaper units

  • Has anyone gotten any feedback from Harmon on this issue?
