Side spin

A quick search shows me this has been asked several times.

Has side spin data improved or is it still unreliable?

I am looking at buying a launch monitor to improve my game. Really not too bothered about distance accuracy, which most reviews seem to focus on. For me, ball direction, is what is going to improve my game.

Either this or Mevo plus, which is a lot more expensive.

Any guideance appreciated

Thanks for the reply.

However, that doesn’t tell me how accurate it is.

The online reviews almost all universally state that side spin is not accurate on indoor mode, when compared to more expensive launch monitors.

I was hoping that this had been resolved.

For me, the purpose of a launch monitor is to gather accurate data to allow a player to improve their golf swing. One of the most important pieces of information is ball direction. Not great if the data is telling me I hit a driver 280 straight down the fairway, when in reality I have actually sliced the ball.

Does Garmin have any plans to address this?

If the device is setup per the recommendations linked here: Tips for Indoor or Outdoor Approach R10 Placement and aligned with the spacing, the following accuracy is achieved with the related metrics you mentioned:

Launch angle accuracy: +/- 1 degree
Launch direction accuracy: +/- 1 degree

There is also a note on the link above in my previous response regarding spin indoors and spin accuracy as well to consider.

The accuracy Garmin states in the Accuracy article is the accuracy that the Approach R10 is capable of achieving for your sessions if setup criteria, spacing, and environmental factors allow for proper ball flight capture during the session.

No radar based system can measure side spin (maybe Trackman can to some extent).

Side spin is calculated indoor based on club path direction, and ball direction.

This is quite good if the unit is properly aligned, and You hit the sweet spot on Your club.

It will not measure gear effect at all, so if You hit heel or toe the side spin will be very wrong.

So there is nothing Garmin can do with this on the R10.

Only solution for this issue is to add camera and dotted balls like mlm2 and Square.

Yep. Hence why I bought the MLM2Pro.
