Garmin Golf freezes on Android 13

Cross-posting to the R10 forum since it's more active.

When using driving range on Android 13 (tablet and phone) after hitting a ball, the ball trace stops moving midway through the arc and the app freezes up. After a few seconds (guessing around 15-30 seconds) the arc moves a little bit and freezes again. Sometimes the "app isn't responding" dialog pops up. Seems to be some kind of graphic issue with Android. I don't have any problems with Home Tee Hero or E6.

  • I enabled developer tools on my phone and captured a system trace in Android - when the app freezes, I can see there's a worker thread of the com.garmin.android.apps.golf app that goes into a dead state. I am seeing "Garmin Golf isn't responding" and also "System UI isn't responding" notifications. I can provide the trace file. Let me know if there's anything else I can do to assist.

  • Below are the steps I recommend trying based on your description of your concern with the shot trace line freezing up: 

    1. Remove the pairing between the Approach R10 and the tablet you are using. Then log out of the Garmin Golf app on the tablet. 
    2. Confirm the R10 is paired with the Garmin Golf app on a compatible smartphone. > Once paired, turn the R10 off. Then start a Driving Range sim session in GGA. It will load (possibly to a black screen) and this is when you power on the R10. It should connect and open the Driving Range session normally.
    3. If you continue to have the concern, please reach out to Garmin support to discuss further solutions with a golf specialist so more info can be gathered.

  • Thanks for your response. I followed your instructions on my Moto G Stylus (2023) phone with the same result, waiting to power on the Garmin R10 until the Driving Range sim is loaded. The app still freezes in the middle of rendering the ball trace. I have another trace from that phone I can provide if requested. Will reach out to Garmin support per your suggestion.

  • I've had some back-and-forth with Garmin support so I thought I'd update here. I have tried disabling wi-fi, location, and various other settings within developer options (e.g. bluetooth version) to no avail. I've cleared cache and reinstalled several times. I have found that the issue may be location-related, since I did not experience problems at a nearby park, but I did experience the issue at my local driving range the same as at home. Specifically the issue occurs only when using the Distance Range of the Driving Range app; the other range modes (Crooked Creek etc.) are not affected. The issue is specific to Android 13 devices; I do not experience problems using an iPhone SE or a Moto G7 running Android 10.
