Can’t get even close to accurate readings on my new R10

Just got my r10 and was so excited but man am I frustrated and starting to get a little disappointed. I’m new to golf so keep this in mind. Here’s my setup so you all know all the possible factors.

im in a garage with 16 foot ceilings and fluorescent lights

im hitting into a 7 foot tall golf tent about 10 to 12 feet wide

im using a 1 foot by 2 foot green that came with chipping targets

i have the garmin between 6 to 8 feet away

i used a club to align garmin to tee

the green is 10 feet away from the front of the tent

the floor is concrete

I am not a good player. This may be the issue idk

when I hit with my driver, I can’t hit further than 115 yards. This could be cause I can’t hit the ball high or it doesn’t give the ball time enough to get high. Idk. It’s very accurate when I hit it left or right. Spot on. But the distance is terrible.  Now when using irons it’s even worse. 40 yards. 25 yards. Never high.  It’s hard to fine tune this garmin when I’m not a good golfer. So I feel I’m at a loss on what the true issue could be. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  • Try making some adjustments to the spacing of the R10 behind you. Ensure there is nothing directly next to the R10, and check the surroundings to make sure that there are no heat sources, or fans nearby.

Ultimately, changing the environment to an outdoor range is another way you can test and compare sessions indoor using the R10.

If you have not already, reference the Garmin article that covers in-depth the spacing and recommendations for indoor setups here: Tips for Indoor or Outdoor Approach R10 Placement

After confirming the recommendations are being followed, if you continue to have concerns check out the troubleshooting article here: Troubleshooting Radar Features of the Approach R10

  • I would definitely cover the concrete with carpet or something first. And yeah it's frustrating to see how well the unit works for Internet golfers who are flushing it most of the time. One thought to which you alluded is that thin shots show very low launch angles. I get the best distance with my 3 hybrid, because of either low backspin or low launch. 3 wood and driver don't carry far enough. You can try tipping the unit forward and calibrating but I don't do that.

  • Yeah, if the user's swing/club used results in a lower initial launch angle...more spacing from the tee location to the target location may be needed to allow the R10 to record more ball flight data in the shot capture. The more space from the shot location to the target location the ball is being into, the better.

Many users...including me, may find shot performance affected when hitting indoors on turf mat vs grass at a range or on course. Closed indoor spacing can also cause inadvertent differences in performance when hitting a ball in a confined space, as opposed to being in an open outdoor environment.

  • What’s crazy is I’ve seen people hit a driver to a padded wall just a couple feet distance and it shows they hit a 300 yard drive. I just connected it to the garmin express app and it was already updated to latest software. It said once it connects to your mobile device it updates in back ground so that wasn’t the issue. So I’ll try these other suggestions you guys have said.  I unfortunately cannot try it outside because I live dead center of town square and I have no front yard or back yard. Just a building next to the road.

  • In order to have a slight possibility to look for answers, this is needed:

    - Club

    - Club speed

    - Ball speed

    - Vertikal launch angle.

    - Attack angle

All of these are measured by the unit (except club type of course), and will basically tell me if Your swing is terrible, or the unit is misreading something.

It would also help to know club path and club face in order to know if You are really slicing or hooking the ball.

Especially slicing will rob You of tons of distance.

But let us start with the easy ones above.
