Bought an R10. Software Engineers Feedback

Hi I've been a software engineer for about 20 years, with a background in building apps for Android and ios many years ago before I moved to backend and cloud to focus on site reliability work.

I've been golfing since I was a kid but started taking it seriously about 3 years ago.

Picked up an R10 and also a Lenovo Tab M10 3rd gen. And I have to say, the software seems to run like an absolute dog on android. I also has a garmin venu for on course so I am fully a "committed garmin customer"

I had to sideload the APK which is completely ridiculous. On the Lenovo, I did get it running, but when it tried to render shots, it would lag out and crash half the time. Terrible.

I ran it on a new iPad pro for comparison, and besides it actually being possible to download, it ran as smooth as could be. This enraged me. Why the h*ll does this bloody app run like racecar for iOS and run like a total dog on android

Customers are forking out 850+ dollars for the r10, and you can only use it on a crappy 3.5" screen, or so some song and dance to project it to a screen? Who thought this was acceptable performance?

I also shelled out 250 bucks for a new tablet, just to run the garmin golf app. The garmin site is completely unclear and obscure that it doesn't really support tablets for android. This is CRAZY. I REPEAT THIS IS CRAZY.

YOU NEED TO SUPPORT BOTH ANDROID AND IOS TABLETS, AND IT NEEDS TO RUN RELIABILY AND SMOOTH. Anything less is a complete comprise of garmins values, it's commitment to its customers, and ultimately, will impact its bottom line.

GARMIN PLEASE FIX THIS.

It is crazy to me that a my old Samsung S7 can run garmin golf simulator with my r10 better than a brand new 2022 Lenovo tab M10 running android 12.

You are alienating thousands of current customers qho bought the R10 and expect the outstanding hardware to have similarily outstanding software.

You are alienating many multiples of that who are potential r10 customers who will figure out the r10 software is not anywhere close to where it needs to be, and will return the r10, or not buy it when reviews become more honest.

I WANT TO LOVE MY R10. PLEASE LET ME LOVE IT. invest in your mobile development team and give them the support and resourcing they need to make the garmin golf software good.

  1. You are tarnishing your brand with the current usability, reliability, and performance of this app.
  • They may read it, but, my guess would be they're prohibited from commenting in public.  Speaking as a retired developer, myself, I'll be the first to admit engineers don't always employ the best sense in their interactions with customers ;)

  • I think you're right in generalizing from Android tablet to Android. The app runs like a dog on my android phone too, and had to side load an older version of the app as well. I thought it was simply a performance issue introduced with the export function, which in Cody's defense, was an often requested feature. As I'm not a paid engineer for Garmin, I didn't go to the trouble of trying to help them debug it. I'll just stick with the older version.

  • I call B.S. you guys say it is ios and android compatible, yet won't work on tablets in ios or android form. You are saying one thing so people buy your product, then never help them resolve issues after product is bought. Your customer service to resolve is near non existent. The only thing your garmin r10 simulator works on is a phone so be honest upfront with customers about that, and tell them it is a cheesy indoor sim, that is cartoony if anything. This was purchased by myself to use on a simulator screen and actually hit balls at screen. Your product fails in comparison to the rapsodo mlm2 pro, which is usually only $100.00 more than your pretty generic product. Very sad you have done nothing to fix bugs or issues over the last 3 years. I actually had to trade in last r10 for free replacement as it was buggy, got the new one in mail and haven't used yet in over three months since it is awful to use compared to other simulators. Wished I could get my $600.00 back.

  • The R10 works quite well with GSPro.

Yes, it's usd 250 per year, and You need a quality gaming PC for high resolution graphics.

But usd 250 per year is not so bad compared to usd 100 for home tee hero or mlm2 subscription.

GSPro with R10 is actually comparable with Trackman if You ask me, I use both frequently and see very little to no difference.

  • Do you happen to know how to set up with gspro? A video or instructions? Thanks for the input.

  • There are tons of videos on YouTube on this. Best however is to go to discord and join SGT channel (Simulator Golf Tour).

Garmin has also recently released a new connector for GSPro, basically for the R50, but should also work with R10.

Personally I use 3'rd party connector as this will also enable putting with a web camera.

Not sure if I can link any videos now. They were removed on the past, but maybe will be allowed now as Garmin officially supports GSPro?

In any case just search for Garmin R10 direct connection to GSPro in YouTube, and You will find many videos.

And if You have issues there are plenty of help to get in the discord channel above.
