Attack angle issues

I have been battling an ongoing issue. Club speed/ball speed are looking accurate and consistent based on past data. Attack angle and the resulting launch angle/apex height are quite low. End result is terribly short carry distances, lots of roll out, and very inaccurate data.

  • 3-4 weeks ago my 7 iron was averaging
    • +1.4 degree AOA
    • 17 degree LA
    • 63.7y apex
    • 163y carry
    • 174y total.
  • For the past several weeks, I am seeing
    • -2.5 degree AOA
    • 8.1 degree LA
    • 7.5y apex
    • 116y carry
    • 142y total.

Again, nearly identical swing and ball speeds. Same sim set up as 3 weeks ago. Running latest software, latest version of app on my android, calibrate every session, nothing new in the indoor setup. Laser leveling stand, 7 feet to unit, 10 feet to screen. I am watching the ball hit the middle/top of my screen, I know I am hitting the ball higher than the Garmin is telling me. I use RCT balls and was getting great results three weeks ago, and then something went very wrong.

After the first week of fighting with it, I contacted Garmin support and we were unable to troubleshoot it. They sent me a warranty replacement, which I just spent an hour with in the garage and got the exact same issues (yes, updated firmware). With a setup that had great results just 3 weeks ago and the same problem across two units now, it is hard to believe this is not a software issue. I am starting to see more and more reports of this across the FB page and on here as well. I am about ready to put this thing on eBay and spend the money on the local indoor sim instead or waiting for the new MLM 2. I hate saying that, as I was absolutely delighted 3 weeks ago. Unfortunately, it is really nothing more than a $500 door stop at the moment.

  • You could try using Awesome Golf - they have a 14 day free trial. If this gives you realistic numbers then you know that the problem is the Garmin Golf app.

  • Just tired awesome golf, and it was no better. Ridiculously low launch angles. I can't hit any club past 150y on any of the software. I tried lowering and raising the height of the R10, no improvement. I am at a loss here. Just watched another Rapsodo MLM 2 pro video... I am going to step away and take a break before I sell this thing in anger.

  • Have You tried changing the distance between ball and unit slightly?

And of course measure that the physical distance actually matches the distance settings in the app?

This looks very strange. -2,5 in attack angle should be perfect and probably give higher apex than +1,4.

If it was the other way around I would have thought You may thinned it badly.

On all shots, or just some?

Tried to turn off the projector? These are known to make issues.

  • I will try your distance from ball to unit suggestion, thank you. It is every shot I have this problem with. I literally cannot hit a ball past 150y. A well struck 7 iron that hits the top of the screen is showing an apex of only 12y. A flushed 5 iron that might have carried 190-200 is being reported as a knee-high piss-missile that carries 110 and rolls out 40 yards to 150.

In an effort to isolate every variable, the projector was not on and the only light source was a light bulb that is in my garage door opener. Nothing else in the garage was plugged in (refrigerator/cordless drill charger, etc). I had done my homework and created a pretty decent budget sim that worked as it should. Until it didn't.

  • What version of Garmin Golf are You running on?

    Android?

If Android, 2.11.3 was rolled out 25'th Feb, so maybe the issues started around that time?

If You use Android then it is a possibility to install an older version in order to check.

I'm not allowed to paste link here, but if You do a google search for Garmin Golf APK the first result should link You to a site having all releases of the Garmin Golf app.

I would try 2.10 or 2.11 just to see if that cleares the issue.

The problem is that if this is also a problem on Awesome Golf then it appears to be related to shot data coming from the R10 unit itself.

Attack angle and launch angle are measured by the unit and not calculated in either app.

  • Great suggestion, thank you for this. I just downgraded to 2.11 and will give this a try today!
