Distances a third of what they should be.

I have just set up my golf sim. My garage is only 8' high but I am short so have lots of room for hybrids down. While I am not yet used to swinging in a confined spaqce and my swing is therefore terrible my distances are way off. 70 yards is probably the longest I have had and I have hit three woods and lots of three hybrids. I hit my three hybrid 180 yds normally.

I am  an experienced golfer and am now up to a 10 handicap now due to age. I have excellent distance control on the course especially with short irons. Would interference alone cause this. I have iron shots where it reads the carry in feet they are so short.

I have shut off my projector and put sheets over the concrete between the R10 and my hitting mat. No improvement.

  • Have you updated the firmware on your R10 with Garmin Express on a computer?

    www.garmin.com/.../

  • Also make sure you have about 7ft from R10 to ball and at least 8ft of ball flight (the more the better).

  • Check the spin numbers.  My unit was doing this thing were the spin would lock onto 1000 top spin no matter what, which resulted in nose dive short shots.  I had to reboot everything.

  • The spin numbers seem to be right and no topspin. Thanks for the suggestion.

    I have rebooted etc.

  • Hi.

Should be fairly easy to figure out what is wrong.

Carry distance is mostly depending on ball speed and launch angle. If spin looks correct, then one of those needs to be terribly wrong in order to get the distances You experience.

  • I am having the same issue with my R10.

I purchased the R10 in May 2022.  Before I get any further with this I will tell you that I keep my R10 software updated, the app updated and I carefully measure out the recommended set up area for my backyard net.  The distances that show up on the driving range simulator are way too short... about 25% to 30% short.  I took it to 2 driving ranges and confirmed this.  Every single shot was much shorter than actual.  I kept hoping that Garmin would fix it with a software update, but it still is terrible.

Reading through information on this Garmin community this past weekend, I decided to try the R10 one more time but with the Awesome Golf simulator app.  It made a world of difference!  It seemed to be correct into my backyard net (same set-up I was using before) based on what I know of my typical distances.  I took it to the driving range this last weekend and was testing it with a friend and we found it was very close to actual.  I switched back to Garmin simulator during my practice session a couple times and it gave me the same-old, horribly inaccurate distances with all my clubs.

Awesome Golf works and is really fun to use.  It works great with my iPhone and my iPad in a full landscape view.  The metrics on the screen after each shot are more informative and are actually believable.

With Awesome Golf, the R10 is as much fun to use as I had hoped it would be when I purchased it.  I am extremely disappointed that I will have to spend $349 for a lifetime membership to Awesome Golf (or $200, plus $10 per month) in order to use my R10.  Garmin needs to study whatever Awesome Golf did to make the R10 work and try to replicate it.   I will probably end up spending the money for Awesome Golf membership because having a launch monitor that works correctly is so much fun, but I will be cursing Garmin as I shell out the extra cash.

  • I had the very same experience as yourself but I use Android. Awesome Golf gives very real numbers and the Garmin app doesn't. I cancelled my Garmin subcription and only use AG. Yes, it hurts that you have to pay for a third party software to have meaningful results with the R10 but I think it's worth it. Bye, bye to the Garmin app frustration.

  • There are a few factors to consider when determining the cause of accuracy concerns with the metrics calculated from the R10 during sim sessions. Below are some of the main factors to consider with an at home setup, to see if environmental interference may be affecting the accuracy of the R10:

    • Presence of reflective, or metallic surfaces.
    • In the radar cone of vision that extends from the face of the R10 towards the shot location, are there heat sources, light sources (which I realize you mentioned turning off the projector),
    • Spatial constraints with the at home setup, or other signal interference.
    • The golf ball being used during sim sessions. We highly recommend using the same ball type that you would use when playing a real round of golf at a course. Use of range, limited flight,or lower quality balls compared to what you typically hit with, all factor into the metrics measured during sim sessions at home, and are directly related to shot performance as well.
    • The surface the ball is being hit off of. Are you comparing the distance hitting off a mat, to shot distances you typically average when hitting off an ideal lie, on actual grass...which typically allows the club to compress, into and under the ball? ...or are you hitting the ball off a tee?...or hitting directly off the mat surface.
    • Do you get the same results when hitting outdoors with more room from the shot location to the target for the radar capture to get a longer capture of the ball flight? One of the quickest ways to determine if the at home setup has environmental factors affecting the accuracy, is to set up the R10 outside with more open space in a yard, or at a driving range. If you are noticing that the R10 is more accurate when hitting with no space constraints, and just grass around you, then most likely there is an interference occurring with the at home setup.
    • Make sure the Approach R10 has the most current version of software installed (version 4.30 as of 03/07/23), and also make sure the Garmin Golf app has the most current version of software installed (version 2.11.1 for iOS) or  (Version 2.11.3 for AndroidOS).
    • Perception-wise, there is often a difference in the distance hit indoors, in more confined space compared to teeing off to a wide open course, where slope, grass type, time of year, drought, moisture, air thickness are all factors. I personally hit further outdoors at a course for my tee shot distances, compared to hitting indoors off a synthetic turf hitting mat..especially on Zoysia, with a great lie for the ball (but everyone is different, and swings are like snowflakes sometimes...never exactly the same haha).

You can also check out our Troubleshooting Radar Features of the Approach R10 support page on our site for reference as well.

Another helpful resource is the Tips for Indoor or Outdoor Approach R10 Placement support page to reference if needed, which offers some additional factors to consider compared to the few list above.

If you continue having the concerns after considering the above factors, feel free to direct message me and I can direct you towards further support solutions, to work towards getting the concern you are having resolved.

What is the actual difference of the above mentioned points comparing to the readings from Awesome Golf app?

The Garmin Golf app has for more than a year had issues with distanves, especially with the longer clubs.

The fix was the possibility to raise elevation and temperature, and with that it is now possible to compensate.

But no-one believes that the Awesome Golf app is immune to interference or takes into consideration what mat You're hitting from.

Their algo is simply better, end of story.

For those considering Awesome Golf, I would have a look here first: www.youtube.com/watch
