R10 frustration

Just received my R10. Never been as excited to get a device and never as frustrated and disappointed after receiving it.  I've spent hours researching setup considerations and can not get it to give accurate distances.  I've tried everything even changing altitude to over 9000 feet. I don't golf in the alps so this change should not be necessary but even still the altitude change did not make much of a difference. Still 2 to 3 clubs short. I bought this strictly for inside the garage use.  I am about to give up on this and return.  Any suggestions are welcome.

  • Clear space all around, ensure you have enough space R10 to ball and ball to screen, cover floors, no fluorescent lighting, no fans running, and get an impact screen vs a net. Also invest in buying the Titleist RCT balls or get reflective dots to put on balls.

  • I'm actually hitting into an old 8' x 8' bed comforter which should work with the radar the same as a screen. I have 10' ball to screen and 7' unit to ball.  I've cleared out  around my hitting area as best I can.  Tried covering the concrete but saw no difference.  How close to target line would items mess with the readings? I have wooden shelving that's 3 feet off my target line. If that's an issue I'm screwed b/c those shelves can't be moved.

  • That I do not know... Might be a question for one of the Garmin forum folks. I can only say from experience I had some stuff when I first got mine alongside my wall and once I opened my space up and reorganized to build my sim studio, it has worked perfect. Regarding the comforter though unless you have it tight for the "hard stop" of the ball, I think you might still get the net effect. From what I have seen and read on here it is almost as if it distorts the read of the shot and ball data because it wants to read it like its still traveling but the speed changes abruptly but still moving forward. I have no idea if that is what is actually happening but it has to be something along those lines because radar units aren't designed to get all the flight info in such a short window. The RCT balls do really help with consistency with reads and accuracy.

  • Well I guess I am in a real bad place!  I am outside on the grass.  Woods to my left 20 yards.  According to R10 my 7i swing speed is 55 mph with a distance of 77 yards???  Big change for me from Trakman.  My 14yr son is heart broken his swing speed is 60mph with 80 yrs distance.  I know for a fact on the course the kid hits his 7i 147yards(laser rf)

  • Not assuming you didn't know this or didn't get this right, but, the R10 is very sensitive to setup and doesn't have much in the way of built-in aids to help one get it right.  So that's the first place I'd look.

  • Are you hitting into a net or is this a range? If net, this does not surprise me. There is a lot of commentary as well since the last software update of distance issues as well. I am unsure if you're experiencing worse results than me, but mine for the most part is only issues with the higher ball speed clubs of hybrid to driver. The rest of hte bag is still quite accurate for indoor/short range play. Outside at a range I really do not have any complaints. I do however not bring it to the range that often as the range I frequent most has limited flight balls but the reads are usually spot on to the distances I laser.

  • 77 yds with chs of 55 is not far away.

So the question here is if the swing speed AND ball speed both are measured incorrect, or this is the actual swing speed.

The app does not care about chs at all for calculating distance, only ball speed which is also measured separately.

To me it appears that both chs and ball speed match each other.

But impossible to say if You have a faulty unit, or just reduced swing speed in fear of missing net.

Any opportunity to bring the unit to a golf simulator place, book an hour, and compare?

  • So I took it to range, distance & ball speed all up.  7i back on to normal distance, swing speed up 5 to 10 mph more.  Back at home in garage now, distance down and swing speed down.  If psychological, it is also killing my arms because I am actually swinging harder:) With my tarp set up in garage I have no fear of hitting anything and have 10 feet of height, 18 feet to screen and 10 feet of width to send the ball...

  • Not sure if you were hitting off grass at the range, or hitting off mat while you were there...but that is another factor to consider. For me, I see a difference in distance when hitting off natural grass (better) compared to hitting indoors off of a turf mat. When using a tee my distances are closer indoors & outdoors.

Some users may also find that in a closed indoor space, the environment can cause shorter distances vs hitting outdoors at an open range, or on a golf course.

The more distance between the shot location to the target location the ball is being hit into, more information is gathered from the radar capture...especially when using long irons/woods/driver due to the lower ball flight typically occurring from those longer club types, per the swing of the user, and with the ball position more towards the lead arm when setting up stance to hit.
