4.30 Update chipping and club read issues

The 4.3 update has been amazing with the RCT ball integration from about 8 iron and up. Anything shorter especially wedges you no longer get club data which is a big issue. Also the update has unfortunately ruined chipping... Ive done a lot of testing on this and the shorter you get the worse it gets. Below are some of the things I've been expecting and it makes virtual golf pretty much unplayable well without using about 20 Mulligan's a round :(. Before the update I could easily get through multiple rounds without having mis-reads. I really hope this gets addressed quickly as Sim golf is not really playable.

1) ghost chips where I do a practice swing and the Garmin sends a shot out this also happens on full shots occasionally if you do a takeaway rehearsal before hitting the ball

2) the unit freeze in the calculating screen for about 60 seconds and then send a 40 yard shot

3) the unit completely freeze on the calculating screen and then I had to turn it off and on again

4) shots that I know have carried 10-12 feet and they unit says 3 inches

5) missed shots (shorter inside 50y)

Hopefully chipping can go back to how good it was before the update but keep the RCT as they are great for spin numbers

  • I just bought the R10. It was working great out of the box. Then i updated to version 4.30 so I could use the RCT balls and now I cannot do chip shots. The shortest shot I can make is a 40 yrd shot. I have the unit level and at the same height as the tee box. It is 7 feet directly behind the ball path. The net is 13 feet from the ball at tee off. I have tried to reset the R10 device. I have removed the device from the app as well as my blue tooth. I have deleted the app. Then started the whole process with installing the app and pairing the R10 to the app. calibrating it before each session. Garmin needs to make it so when you update to a version you have an issue with, that you can downgrade to the previous version. Is there an update coming out to fix this issue and use RCT balls?

  • Hey mate your most likely getting some sort of interference now. With the implementation of the RCT ball these units now seem to be more sensitive to interference from fans, heaters, halogen lights and other things. For me it was my projector causing the interference and so I made this video showing that. Hope this helps in some way so you can figure out what's causing the interference.

    Cheers

  • To ku9600, try another phone, both apple and android that was the case for me. I used a xiaomi phone and it worked good but after 4.3 it was not good, but after a few updates in the phone app its works amazing again, but try another phone first and calibrate the unit in the app before using it, and also follow J-lag's advice

  • So this is the darnedest thing. I took your advice. My daily driver for a phone is an IPhone. I found my old Android phone. I first turned Bluetooth off on my IPhone. Then installed the Garmin app on my Android phone. Paired it after signing into my account. It took a couple of chip shots (2) then it started tracking my chip shots. 8yrd shot was the shortest I hit. Yeahhhh. So then I was curious. I turned off the Android phone. Turned Bluetooth back on on my IPhone and now it works as well. I can’t explain it. I tried turning off the Bluetooth before on my IPhone. Nothing else has changed in the room that  I have setup. The only thing I can think of is something to do with the Bluetooth. I had my phones setting in the same place to see the screen. Or some type of interference is coming from upstairs when everyone is home. My setup is in the carpeted basement that is finished. Thanks for all your help and suggestions. I may need to send everyone to the mall lol if I want to play golf in the house.

  • I just got the RCT balls this past week and holy blown away with the accuracy. Anything over 20 yards it is top notch spot on but like others I am having plenty of issues on short chips and pitches not registering. Only way it consistently registering is if I hit flops and get ball up in air and really spinny. I know you mentioned projector interference but my projector is behind me and off to right of where I hit. Would that still possibly create issues? Suggestions?

  • I was having this same issue. I am guessing when you take a full swing you have no issues. When I was trying to make a 10-15 yard shot it was not tracking the ball. The R10 would go from green to red then back to green. But nothing on the screen in the app. Try swinging faster on your short shots. This is what was happening to me. I was swinging to slow for the R10 radar to pick up the ball. Even though the unit was going from green to red. Once I moved a little faster it tracked the ball. Hope this solves your issue.

  • Yes and thats what I am doing. Opening face and hitting more flop/spinny shots to register. Not shots I would first look to hit normally if actually playing on course. I am fine doing it as it is still awesome for full shots which is what I want first and foremost. Would selfishly like to better learn and know short chip carries but is what it is if that is a struggle for unit.

  • Hey mate this might help. I have gone very deep in to the rabbit hole… also if you are running a projector or anything on the room that has a fan check  video:
