Hitting into a net outdoors distances WAY off

I have a backyard set up hitting into a net.  I have tried everything like testing different distances between the garmin and the ball and the net.  Also making sure the bottom of the tripod is even with the bottom of the ball. I am running the latest firmware 4.3.0.

The distances are WAY off.  I generally hit a 7 iron around 145, at times this device is telling me it carrying less than 100 yards, but it is almost always 30-40 yards short.

I have a 3 hybrid that I generally hit around 180-185.  This unit is telling me its carrying 110?

I have googled and read this exact same result on many forums here, going back over a year.  I'd appreciate some feedback from other forum users - does this thing just not work hitting into a net?  If so I'd rather know sooner and sell this thing on ebay and buy something else that works.

Any feedback appreicated.

  • Hahaha I'm an analytics programmer, so maybe I could help. But no, I'm not receiving anything from Garmin. I can see why you're frustrated and am surprised the extra distance to the net didn't make a big difference. Although, their documentation states that increasing the distance beyond eight feet"could" help, I recall. After seeing really good golfers demonstrate how accurate it is online, I wonder if the unit is just not good at reading mishits. Sadly most of my shots fall into the latter category.

  • Hi

looking at buying an R10 and net - are the problems fixed yet ?

  • You can find great results in online videos, but some users are still having trouble with short distance and/or low launch angles. Some of these, including my own low launch angles, could be from radar interference. Uncovered cement floor, metal objects, projectors, or fans are examples. I worked around the problem by tipping the device forward and recalibrating. Others have increased altitude in the weather settings for longer carry. Interference problems are not unique to the Garmin.

  • Without moving the R10 and switching to the E6 driving range the distances are more realistic, I also trialled Awesome golf and found that also more realistic. Something is off with the R!0 calculations. Hitting into a net outdoors in an open space no interference from foreign objects or electrical devices.

  • Yes, this is and has been an issue for a long time.

The problem seems to be related to longer clubs and the unit measures too low launch angle, resulting in shorter distance.

Issue has been compensated by users changing the altitude to 4-5000 yards, and also in the latest firmware 4.3 the support for rct balls has imroved spin readings.

If You don't have rct balls a metal dot on the ball should also work.

  • I use GSPro indoors only and setting the altitude and the boost in GSpro it gets very close to real distances. Also find that short flop shots work well on short shots around the green. The R10 seems to have problems with low shots even with full shots it's like 40% short of real golf shots on the course.

  • If E6 and Awesome golf are more accurate then the issue with the Garmin app should be easy for them to resolve. I would like to try H.T.H. but not until they sort this out.

  • Set the Elevation to 10000 feet, make sure the top of the unit is level not just the base.  Make sure there aren't any Fans or AC units, space heaters, etc running in your room or near your unit if outside as they can cause interference.  I have a wood furnace on  the other end of my 20x48 shop from where my R10 is set up. After some frustration with distances I found that the fan from the wood furnace was causing interference.  A 7 iron shot with the fan on showed 128 yards.  Turned the fan off and the next shot showed 163 yards, close to my normal carry for a 7 iron.  It seems like for some people's environments these units can be fickle to get dialed in.  I'm much happier with the product now that I'm more confident about the distances.....

  • When you say "make sure the top of the unit is level not just the base," what does that mean?

On my unit, there is no way to measure "level" on the top of the sensor.  It is already angled, so where could you measure a level?  The base is the only thing you can be sure is level?

I taped a string level across the top so I can make sure the unit is sitting perfectly level.  Does that make sense?

Today I had issues again, then realized I had a minnow bubbler running in a bucket near my net that was causing interference ( I fish too!).  I unplugged that and my distances went up 40-50 yards.   Apparently the vibrations from that can have an effect.  Would a Refrigerator  or freezer potentially cause issues?  I have both in my shop that are within 20 feet of my R10 but I don't think I've noticed them running when I've been using the R10.

Another Note: If you're using the E6 connect software on a PC (which I do since I'm an android guy) make sure you have the latest version of the software.  The current version is:  1.11.1.3.  and came out on November 10th 2022. The version shows in the lower right corner of the first E6 screen.  That made a difference for me when using the E6 course and range.  E6golf.com/softwareupdates
