Do different hitting nets affect R10 results?

I currently have a 7x7ft black net (GoSports) and my G10 readings are 20-30yds short.  I’ve followed all the alignment protocols and have 9-10ft from ball to net.  I’ve seen on all the R10 videos they’ve been hitting unto a spornia type net (w/ and w/o target).  The only thing I haven’t tried is this type of net and I plan to get that soon to try and hopefully get better readings.  My setup is on my backyard concrete patio and I don’t believe this is causing my issue even though the R10 support page says concrete might affect some readings.  I’ve covered the area with blankets and wood floor panels and didn’t affect any results.  I hope this new net solves the problem as I’m out of ideas!!

  • Same as for all similar posts.

It is impossible to say anything about the issue as long as You don't provide any data to compare outdoor (range) with indoor/net.

Something is obviously different, as the distances are different, but what?

Reduced club / ball speed will result in shorter distances.

Increased back spin will result in shorter distances.

Lower launch angle will normally result in shorter carry etc, etc.

Different net type should probably not influence at all, unless You are using some kind of net with metal in it that can reflet radar signals.

But I would start elsewhere for more obvious reasons.

  • Same issue, Outdoors ranges are spot on, indoor crap. I went on a 3 day building binge in the basement of my house, built an 8.5 foot high by 10 foot wide pvc hitting encloser with center canvas cloth so I could use as a screen. covered the floor in green indoor outdoor carpet. 10 feet from ball to back of net. 8 feet from ball to R10. raised above ball line or below ball line, tilt no tilt, zero elevation to 10,000 feet elevation ALL BS NUMBERS. GW-outside 97 yards inside 30, on a hard shot 40. 9I-outside easy 125, inside 50 to 60. 7I-outside 145 to 165 inside 80 maybe 90. A sweet hit on my driver on line under 0.5 deviation 145 inside. We need indoor settings. I dont have a $1,000.00 mat but it is good quality and I have even tried irons hitting off tees. I hope saved the box this thing came

  • And same answer..

Not one single data that may explain why shots are measured shorter.

    Fantastic.

  • You would think a software designer could add an adjustable calibration feature buttion / slide, a bench mark of a known range to adjust the algorithm for indoor use. If I wanted to hit balls outside I would go to the range or my local golf course.

  • Yes, I totally agree.

The elevation setting etc has made it possible to tweak it a bit, but as the deviation is different for each club it's not very practical. Especially since it doesent "remember" Your last setting.

The big problem also occures when You are playing hth, as You cannot change elevation every time You change club. That is just too annoying.

And also for me playing practice balls, elevation adjustment is not enough, and the difference between wedges and woods are way bigger tyan for normal balls.

All of this could have been solved with individual club settings in an indoor mode.

On range I find the unit quite accurate, and has really helped me dial in my lengths of my clubs and I see the same lenghts when playing a real round.

But for indoor use You really need to be able to use a real golf ball in order to have any use of it, and even then it's not perfect yet.

  • Only from experience here, not an expert*

I have found that if you adjust the weather on your session

*Increase temperature, decrease altitude, decrease humidity

You are able to adjust the numbers to stock carry in the driving range and then into Home Tee Hero as needed.

Again not an expert. Just my experience

Note: I use my R10 indoors from 6ft behind ball and approximately 8 feet to net.

  • Any updates to this thread?  I'm getting bogus results indoors in my basement using real golf balls. (8.5 high exposed wooden joists, 10' wide projection matt, concrete floor.)

I upgraded to v4.30 firmware so I am up to date.

I've also read about the metal-infused golf balls but haven't tried them.  I'm wondering if that helps.

  • I love the R10, outdoors in an open air environment you will get the same results as a $10,000.00 launch monitor, but if you bring it into confined spaces it does not like it. Awesome golf or E6 helps. I have more than the distance recommended for monitor to ball and ball to screen. If Garmin could fix this they would have already done it. Expect when you feel a good compressed ball hit it will be 15% short of an outdoor hit. Enjoy the R10 indoors watch the spin rates and directions and put distance out of your mind or you will never be happy. Camera based launch monitor prices are coming down....

  • I really appreciate the quick reply! I'll do more playing around and see what I come up with. I haven't played with it as much as I would like.
