net with or without nylon target?

has anyone compared how the R10 performs outside with a net based on if your net is just net, or if it has a big nylon target on it?

i saw in david maxfield's video he is using a spornia net with a big black nylon target on it.  my net is just black netting and has no target.

could this be something that is causing my readings to be inaccurate, where in david's vids, he's at least getting data on the garmin app

that is close.  i don't really want to get awesome golf to attempt to get better results, as the r10 should be able to do it on it's own.

thanks!!

  • I currently have a 7x7ft black net (GoSports) and my G10 readings are 20-30yds short.  I’ve followed all the alignment protocols and have 9-10ft from ball to net.  I’ve seen on all the R10 videos they’ve been hitting unto a spornia type net (w/ and w/o target).  The only thing I haven’t tried is this type of net and I plan to get that soon to try and hopefully get better readings.  My setup is on my backyard concrete patio and I don’t believe this is causing my issue even though the R10 support page says concrete might affect some readings.  I’ve covered the area with blankets and wood panels and didn’t affect any results.  I hope this new net solves the problem as I’m out of ideas!!

  • that is the same net i have as well.  i tried putting a sheet over top of the black net and it made no difference in the measurements. please keep me posted on how it goes with your new net.  i like the look of the spornia one.  it is a lot taller than the gosports one.  the way the gosports net hangs, i rarely use higher than a 7 or 8 iron, just to be safe!

  • I'm no engineer but I think the outdoor net issue is the same as indoor setups. 8 feet is not enough time for R10 to gather launch / angle / spin  data. It's going to take somewhere between the suggested 8 feet to around 20 feet which will make most indoor set ups impossible with high launch wedges. I think in a short range setup with a net the R10 is relying only on club head speed and path to estimate launch and spin, I'm not that good with math just looks like there would be a way to tell the R10 it was in a short range with net setup you could add a + (2) multiplier and my R10 would be spot on in my indoor setup. Mine is in a 13X20 room over 9 feet Ball to net, 8 feet ball to R10 Full carpet. Started with R10  positioned flat on floor, move blocked, up angled, down angled, all the way to a mount 3 feet above ball height pointed down (this actually increased yardage).
