4.2 Update - distances maybe even worse than before?

Received the latest R10 update and was excited to test it out so I used my standard outdoor setup that has a golf net 10' from the shot area and the R10 7' behind it. I've use this exact setup since spring and am familiar with my distances and stats.

The release notes indicate better head speed measurements with this update, so I figured it would give more accurate distances. Shockingly, the numbers are possibly worse than before.

On the course, my driver gives 210-230 carry, with most drives rolling out 230-260. Using the Garmin Golf sim with the 4.2 update, not a single drive carried 200yds. Most were 180-195.

I also use E6 golf and increase my altitude setting to give better distances, and even it was coming up short compared to previous E6 sessions.

I also looked at the head speed numbers for various clubs and they were all down 10%. Driver was showing in the mid to high 80's and ball speed never getting above 130mph. A MeVo device and a cheap head speed radar show head speeds in the 95-100 range with ball speeds in the high 130's to 140's.

So basically, everything with 4.2 is as it was before. Maybe worse because previously with Garmin Golf, it would sometimes show a drives with up to about 210 carry.

Garmin - you've really got to give us an option to calibrate to our real playing conditions. Numerous others have requested this. At the simplest level, let us set a % change for the head speed. This simple option would eliminate our biggest complaint in a manner that's trivially easy to implement and use.

Until then, I'll just keep using E6 and setting my altitude to 4,000 to 6,000 feet. That seems to give me simulations that closely match my playing experience where I am, near sea level.

  • Did another session just now with my standard clubs.

Played a round in hth on my home course where I know where the ball will approx end up. Played with the same clubs as I normally play with.

Final score 76 (short par 60 course), which is something I can play on a good day.

Observations: short par 3's played with pw and 9 iron from tee almost as normal.

Long par 3 (approx 180 yds), played with 7 wood -> way too short.

Par 4's with driver off tee, way too short.

In my set up this evening the unit really struggled with long irons and 7 wood. Can't pick up the lower ball flight is my thoughts. Really good with wedges and up to 9 iron.

Did a range session afterwards, confirming this.

My wedges almost as normal, 9 iron shorter, and deteriorating rapidly from there.

Had some shots with my normal driver (Ping 425 Max).

Felt I hit the ball on a couple of the shots really good.

Club speed on these 89 and 88 mph, which is my normal chs on range. Total distance around 145 yards, which is about 60-80 yards short. I found the reazson which is ball speed. Ball speed of 95 and 92 mph may be correct for the practice ball I'm hitting with, but that won't help me playing hth.

Not sure why I achieved better ball speed on my test with the callaway driver earlier, but this is something I will test further.

If I can find out great. If not, playing with practice balls may be limited to short game practice, up to 100 yards.

Playing hth with practice ball will still probably require possibility to increase ball speed manually. The good news is that club head speed and club path etc still appears correct. So swing and speed training can still be done with practice balls, also for the longer clubs. As long as the unit picks up the low flight shots.

  • Here is one shot with an 8 iron t100s (38 degree) hit pretty well. Tad outside in but this was the best I captured out of a a handful of shots. 86mph is spot on for my 8 iron club head speed, but 99MPH ball speed is about 10 mph short which correlates to the short distance. V Launch and height seem way off as well. With a -2.8 attack I would assume something like 20 degree launch and maybe 95 ft height.

  • spin looks to be 2000-2500 rpm higher than ideal..

what’s your launch angle? Seem like it’s ballooning..

that’s probably why you’re not seeing the numbers you expect.

btw. What app are you using?

  • Yes spin is abnormally high on most shots. That’s awesome golf app.

  • My follow-up after getting the updated Garmin Golf app on the iPad - LOVE IT!

Now that we can set the altitude etc. I can totally tune it so that Garmin Golf matches my local playing condition and distances. This eliminates my past gripes with the system and I think most people living near sea level will find that setting the altitude to ~5000ft. gets rid of the "short shot" syndrome. Yes, it's a kludge, but it works great.

  • It’s great we can cheat the system w/ altitude to get our playing distances, but the data is still incorrect. Ball speed, launch, and spin are all way off. I’m working on those metrics to tune in and properly gap/loft my iron set.

  • Maybe you’re not striking the ball well?

I would suggest having better strikers try your R10 to compare results.

  • Sorry, I don’t understand. I am using an R10. Strikes are just fine.
