Garmin R10 Does NOT work with Outdoor Nets

I waited so long and wanted this to work sooooooo badly, but sadly the R10 does not work with outdoor nets. Yes, I have the correct distances. 9 feet ball to net. Yes, I have more than 8ft behind. Yes, I've calibrated it, yes. I've messed with levels. But NOTHING works. It is RIDCULOUSLY SHORT on distances. When I hit in to the outdoor net, its 50-70 yards short per club. My longest 7 iron I can hit is 112 yards, lol. I suck at golf, but not that badly! My 7 is usually at 155-160 club. Driver is worse. It wont even get past 200 yards when I smash it. Driver usually goes 240-260 in real life.

But here is the kicker, it worked perfectly on the range. The numbers and shot shapes looked good on the range.

But I did not buy it for the range, I bought it for my backyard set up. And with the backyard set up, its unusable. Its so bad on the outdoor net its straight up laughable. Did Garmin even test this thing on outdoor nets, based on the results they did not. And I'm not the only one having this issue, there are lots of forums like this for people suffering like me.

Long story short, it does not work on outdoor nets. If you are buying this for an outdoor (or indoor) sim set up, save your money and buy something else that works.

  • Seem to be having the same issue. Purchased R10 on 23rd June 2023. Software came with version 4.30 already installed. Outside, hitting into 10 ft x 7ft GO sports net. 7i max average distance about 100m, on the simulator at drummond was hitting about 140m. So about 40m out for distance. Using Garmin Golf, E6 or Awesome Golf gives the same values, changing elevation, temp, humidity makes no difference. 2.1m from R10 to ball, 2.4m from ball to net (the recommended distances).  Disappointed as many of the reviews on youtube show the R10 giving values relatively close to the simulators. None of the fixes recommended on the garmin website, in youtube videos, threads here, or on reddit are making any difference.

  • Sorry to hear this. Can you give ball speed or preferably all the metrics? Maybe there is a clue somewhere in there. The only thing i can think of is concrete or other interference.

  • Thanks for the reply. Funnily enough, I noticed that my swing speed was maxing at 100km/h no matter how hard I swung. I don't swing fast but it should.be higher then that.

Tried again today and the swing speed was reaching up to 125km/h which is much closer to my max. My distances were also closer too, got quite a few more in the 130m range with the 7i which is getting close to the simulator. The only major difference was that i was using the r10 during the day, rather than at night like I did for the first time. Distances still measured the same from r10 to ball to net. Changing the elevation seemed to make a difference this time. Not sure why my numbers became more accurate all of a sudden, I tried re aligning, re measuring and recalibrating many times the first day I had it and it made no difference.

So more promising results today, might be worth buying the RCT balls to get that last 10m of carry distance accuracy, if a review I read is accurate

  • Yes pretty mysterious. Maybe there is a fluorescent light or other device interfering in the microwave frequency range. Fans, even for projectors, can bounce back the microwaves as well. Good luck!

  • Hi. Not sure if You are inside or outside?

Pls be aware that the app defaults to local conditions when playing. So if You play in evenings it may be colder, headwind etc, which may affect Your distances quite a lot.

Quite annoying that You have to remember to change to custom settings before starting a sim session or same in hth.

I would also change club speed to mph as km/h is rarely used, even for us using metric system.

If You could post chs, ball speed and distance it's easier for us to compare with our own stats.

From top of my head I think I'm hitting a 7 iron approx 130 m carry with chs of around 80 mph.

  • Seems to be working ok now, took the R10 down to drummond and compared it to the simulator - with the RCT balls, the sim and R10 were often within 1m of each other. Bought a set of RCT balls for home and seem to be getting some good numbers now, good hits at around 125m - 130m carry, which was pretty much what I was getting in the simulator. Funny during the gap session i was managing around 139m carry but they may have been absolute top level strikes. Happy now I think, will post more if I run into any more issues

  • Me too, outside net scenario, gives erroneous (short) numbers.  However, I suspect the relative readings are correct, meaning a good swing will be reported as being better than a bad swing.  Looks to me like swing paths and face angles are fairly  correct.  Taking it yo the range shortly and will update after that.
