R10 Hardware Issues..!!?

From the ‘R10 Distances Off’ forum a user is now reporting that they’re having their unit replaced and Garmin support told them that ‘hardware changes have been made at the factory’… If true then early units may have a hardware issue….

Can Garmin please confirm the position, and what units this affects (eg units manufactured before xx).

  • Interesting video… goes to show you alignment of the unit is important.  Specifically ensuring the ball is perpendicular to the R10 face.  Though it didn’t seem to affect many of the readings, the golfers waggle oils have abused isreads… he needs to make sure the unit resets back to a green ready light.  Typically 3-5secs after the club head over to is detected.

  • what I noticed on the video too, the units were not identical in terms of alignment and angle, they were slightly off.  I wish the took a level and a square, and perhaps a framing angle to set them close together.  I can tolerate the reads being "close enough" but I am getting 60-70% misreads, so no data at all.  I did also get a few reads that were way off, not even close, for example, reading a shot 45 yards left of target when it actually flew and landed 30 yards right of target.

  • Based on the findings in these videos, I just flushed 600 bucks down the toilet. We’ll see what Garmin does to improve it, but as far as using a device to improve my swing right now, my Mevo will be front and center. It’s super consistent.

  • Man, I am losing my mind with this thing.

So, out of the box I was having issues, so jumped on the Garmin live chat. They were quick to help which was great, and suggested I do the software update right away. That I did, then hit the range immediately after, it seems to work.

(prior to that update - it was literally catching 1 out of 25 shots)

NOTE - Each time I setup at range, it's perfectly spaced as per the instructions. Distance back, left/right etc etc. Then it's calibrated every single time I fire it up.

The next time I hit the range, it's registering MAYBE 2 out of 10 shots. If it wasn't $800, I would take my 4 iron to it and see if I could hit the 100 yard marker.

    SO FRUSTRATING.

When you setup, address ball - the light on the device is green. Then sporadically flashes red, then green then red.... then nothing happens.

I just want this thing to work ffs.

  • I am beyond frustration and disappointment with this device. Have invested a substantial amount of money and an immense amount of time creating a golf simulator only to find that this device keeps going into stand by mode every shot, or if I'm really lucky it may take 3 shots to display this. Basically all my shots are the same distance, driver to 8 iron around 100 yards give or take 20 yards (neither husband or I csn get more than 110 yards) and my wedge two yards even though I'm hitting from 10 feet away into the centre of the screen.

I have done TONS of reading and research and can't seem to get this thing to work no matter what I try. Not sure if I just throw this in the garbage bin (feel guilty selling to another unsuspecting soul) or keep wasting my time trying to get this thing to work.

I bought it in the summer and only used it once it twice for a half hour each time as my real intention was to use during our long Canadian winter, so not sure if this was a dud out of the  box or if all of them are this way.

Oh, and we even went through the effort of building a faraday cage around the projector as some videos were suggesting radio interference from the projector was a problem. If it's the heater interfering, I'm pooched, cause not going to golf in a building when it's -30° outside and no heat in the building.

Well, anyway that's my rant and Garmin if you or anyone else have some insight into what might resolve this, I'd be happy to hear it.

  • I've had similar issues using multiple setups and configurations.  I tried to play a round yesterday and it was borderline unusable.  Missed shots, standby mode, device bluetooth failing, restarts required - I got to the 6th hole and it wouldnt read my driver shots anymore so I quit.  I bought a BLP last night and won't be using the Garmin device any longer.  It's just not worth the hassle and frustration.

  • Apparently the Garmin does not automatically update from the app on your phone which the website says it does. I just downloaded Garmin Express to my computer and attached the R10 and low and behold there was an updated to 4.3 or something like that.

I tried to determine my firmware version on the app prior to attaching to computer, but couldn't seem to find that so just decided to plug in and see if there was an update.

So, now will go try and see if this has helped to solve any if the annoying issues

  • Sorry it's not working for you. The only thing I can think of is the heater or leveling the device or maybe a concrete floor. Maybe you could put some wire mesh or screen over the heater too. I guess you've tried without the projector turned on, to verify the cage is effective.

  • The R10 unit does not update automatically. It has no internet connection, so it needs to get plugged into a pc running Garmin Express in order to be updated.

The phone app should be updated automatically if You have allowed updates to happen automatically.

If You use an Android tablet, it will never update automatically.

To me it seems like most of Your issues are related to old firmware on the R10 and /or old app version on Your phone.
