Spin Axis - is there anyone at Garmin I can please speak with?

I'm an indoor sim golfer - been playing for around 8 years using a GC2 with HMT.

The Garmin R10 was of huge interest due to the great price point and I am thankful to have received mine quickly.

I've been testing it against the GC2/HMT and have noticed the biggest differences to be related to Spin axis (club path) where GC2/HMT shows in to out and draw ball flight, whereas R10 shows out to in and fade ball flight.

Also.. with 3W and driver I am seeing a lower launch angle with R10, by 3 degrees or so.

My videos on YouTube are below.

Is there anybody at Garmin I can speak with to understand more about the unit and see if there are things I can do in my setup?

Thanks, Phil (v8burble / Hybrid Me)

Hopefully Garmin looks into this more closely! The unit has a lot potential and the sim golf community’s feedback is priceless.

  • Here's another video that shows the spin axis (side and back) and the lunch angle algorithms is a bit off and might need to be recalculate.

When can we possibly expect an update that would fix the spin issues? If it's not dealt with, it may be a dealbreaker for many.

  • Hello! Did you have the chance to update the software on the Approach R10? Although brand new, it isn't necessarily up to date out of the box. This can be done with Garmin Express.

Changes made from software version 3.20 to 3.30:

    • Improved adjacent shot rejection for shots outside the designated hitting area.
    • Improved outdoor club path & attack angle estimations for wedge shots.
    • Improved outdoor side spin estimation.
    • Improved indoor launch elevation for wedges.

Update Golf Courses and Device Software on an Approach

Otherwise, I would be happy to take the details you provided and pass it along to our engineering team to review. Accuracy of the product is definitely important.

  • I have been running with version 3.30 ever since my very first test session. I am still seeing issues with the spin axis - as shown in the latest video I posted today. https://youtu.be/uJUQpnQ9sMM

I'd be very grateful if you could please feed this to the engineering team and I'd be very happy to discuss any of my testing with them and implement and changes/tweaks they may recommend. Thanks, Phil

  • I would like to add to this one as well, I have been using the r10 for a while (I was one of the first to receive one) like @stalkerstewart I am seeing club path differences to reality, as well as lower launch than I would expect to be seeing, resulting in lower distance. I am on v3.30, I would concur with the findings in the video, it’s very much worth the engineering team or product manager watching it, it is very representative of what is being see in the wild

a summary of thoughts for the engineering team, launch angle seem to less than expected on every shot, spin axis seems to be under reading consistently, club path is a little more random, maybe this is to do with gear effect on the club and the assumption is that it’s always a centre strike, if not a centre strike then a draw is reported as a fade often

  • A ticket has been opened with our engineering team on these findings. If you are also experiencing these discrepancies, please highlight my name and send me a private message.

  • I'm having the same problems. Low launch angle by 3 to 4 degrees compared to the mevo+ , my baby draws are big fades on the R10, I even had a great shot seen as a duck hook on the R10. Spin axis is to low

If I wait like 30 seconds before playing a shot then the next shot says calculating on E6 driving range by the ball does not fly. The next shot then works.

Same results when using r10 driving range.

Firmware is up to date, R10 is aligned perfectly. I also tried 6ft , 7ft ,8ft. All the same results.   My distance from ball to screen is 11.3ft

My poorly struck shots read the same mevo and Garmin but my great strikes go in opposite directions when having the mevo+ and garmin side by side.

  • Ditto Rob, I’m really happy with the majority of the numbers but the spin axis does seem off. I’m have a 5-6 degree in to out path and usually hit a fairly big draw, and the r10 rarely shows a draw. Also worth noting that it seems closer on e6 rather than the garmin app, if that’s of any use. Cheers
