I've failed with 2 different cheap foam balls. I got some Almostgolf brand foam balls and they do register although distances are well below real golf balls
Foam, plastic, reduced flight, or practice balls will may result in a shot being detected...but will not provide realistic results ideal to metrics realistic to how a realistic golf ball will perform.
For best results, it is ideal to use golf balls that you would typical use during a round of golf on an actual golf course.
