when there are multiple footpods and GPS attached to an activity, what field in the FIT file indicates the priority device for distance and pace?

I noticed my ancient Vivoactive (v1) prompts the user to select which footpod device to be used as priority before an activity.

However modern Garmins like the Fenix6 do not and will silently connect multiple footpods and GPS simultaneously during an activity.

It is obviously only using one device for distance and one device for pace.

(this behavior and lack of feature is extremely poor in that the user cannot set priority outside of the devices for the activity, ie [1. GPS 2. Stryd 3. HRM-Pro]  but we won't get into that for now)

So my question is where in the FIT file does it indicate which device was used if not GPS?

I cannot seem to figure it out, is it an undocumented field?

Thanks for any enlightenment.

  • I don't think there is any FIT file message field that will tell you which sensors were used for pace and distance. On Fenix 6 devices it depends on the sensor settings: if the foot pod sensor setting for Speed and Distance is Always then that will take precedence over the HRM-Pro.
