There seems to be a premise that FIT files are only generated by devices with a manufacturer and a serial number. Is there any provision in the standard or elsewhere for "manufacturers" like myself to output FIT files from software that acquires content from elsewhere (in this specific case Peloton Bike+ devices)? My FILE_ID message currently indicates GARMIN and my EPIX's serial number, but that's a real misrepresentation. I recognize that Peloton is not a FIT device, which is why I there exists software to convert what it captures. While Strava's lookup algorithm is another dimension of the same quagmire, it does seem like the FIT protocol ought to have some provision for what a FILE_ID should say for FIT files that are derived works without every tom-***-harry like myself having an official manufacturer ID. Discuss. :-)
