Messenger App Fails to Send Location Data

I have an inReach Mini 3 Plus. When I send a message to an email address using the device UI, the email text includes a hyperlink to display my current location and it all works as expected. When using the Messenger app on my iPhone 16, the resultant email includes a hyperlink but no location is displayed (just shows a map of the world).

Is anyone else seeing this behavior?

According to the Including Your Location With inReach Messages web page, the Messenger app actually uses the iPhone GPS to determine the location. I do have location services enabled, and the app is configured to have access to the location "when using" the app.

This is not using MapShare. The recipient is an email address not a phone number.

  • I feel so stupid. There is the direction indicator icon just to the left of the text entry area. There was a line through it. Just tapping that icon clearing the line enabled the location information for my message. Duh! However, if you click the + icon and add the Mapshare link to the message, the location hyperlink is NOT provided in the email and the Mapshare site doesn't display the location either (unless you have tracking turned on I suppose).
