locked contacts

I have a contact in the messenger app that appears with a lock on it. I want to delete it, but it won't let me. If I click on the contact's phone number, I see a message from last year to this person which didn't go through. Because of that, it seems, I can't delete the contact. But there seems to be no way to delete the unsent message either.
