Garmin Handicap vs USGA Handicap

My Garmin Handicap is different than my USGA Handicap, and talking to some of my playing partners they see the same thing. When we play in the golf league it would be great if we could see net scoring based off the USGA rather than the Garmin Handicap. So, is there a way to replace the Garmin Handicap with the USGA Handicap so that the scorecard and live tracking can show net scores based on the USGA Handicap?

  • The handicap calculation for USGA is reflected differently, likely due to factors and other "new" updates to how that platform updates handicap, along with the requirements for local/index scoring being calculated for specific competition reasons. USGA uses the World Handicap System but also has other specific provisions with the requirements of uploading a scorecard to their system vs the scorecards uploaded to the Garmin Golf app from our devices.

The Garmin Golf Handicap system is based on the World Handicap System. The scorecards with the strokes, and the tee box selection used on those rounds synced over to the Garmin Golf app using the golf compatible Garmin GPS device...factor the handicap calculation.

Certain models (like the Approach S70) also have the handicap scoring setting within the Golf Settings menu on the watch, where local handicap, or index/slope scoring can be enabled vs the World Handicap System calculation used to generate the handicap within the Garmin Golf app.

More info referenceable through our articles linked below to provide more extensive info on the handicap calculation:

Scorecards synced to the Garmin Golf app do not have compatibility with syncing to GHIN USGA systems, and Garmin has reviewed requests for continuity between the Garmin Golf app and GHIN with the option being unavailable to offer at this time for reasons outside of Garmin control.

  • ~ what exactly are the "other specific provisions with the requirements of uploading a scorecard to their system"??

trying to understand if my Garmin Handicap Index (scoring via Forerunner 965) will differ from the WHS,... and if so, why?

uploading scores to GHIN aside, i think this should be a straightforward answer.

    thx!

  • Everything from Garmin's end is outlined within the two articles linked in my previous response above.

The USGA website explains the other provisions, including what is "new" in relation to their handicap calculation. You would have to go to their site (external to Garmin) to view what those provisions are.

The info we have to provide, is provided in my last response... I cannot speak for USGA in this circumstance to the content on their website.
