Approach S2 won't connect to computer

Tried everything recommended by Garmin - reinstalling garmin express, connecting to a second computer etc and nothing works. When connected to the computer, it will charge, but the computer doesn't see that it is connected. I'm wondering if it is the charging cable, but there is no visible damage to it. I could get an aftermarket replacement cable for about $15-$20, but if that isn't the solution, then it would be better put towards another watch altogether.
