Garmin Golf updated

For some reason there is no sticky thread here from Garmin stating last release and release notes.

This is just to inform that Garmin Golf is in a new release 2.7, replacing the previous version 2.6.1

Since this is a game changer in so many ways, especially for those having a R10 unit, I think it's ok to post the news also here.

Especially for Android tablet users:

Garmin Golf updates will NOT be updated on tablets. In order to get the latest version You will have to download and install it Yourself.

This can be done from here:  https://apkcombo.com/garmin-golf/com.garmin.android.apps.golf/

There are 2 versions of this on this site, I tried the one without dpi settings, the default one. Can confirm it is working on my old tablet (Lenovo running on android 7).

If You ask Garmin they will say that Garmin Golf is not supported for tablets, so You are installing at Your own risk. So far I have seen no postings of the app having any issues on tablets.

  • Version 2.9 released.

Installed on my tablet from apkcombo site, and so far so good.

Not tested towards R10 yet, but app opens and looks normal.

Be aware that after installation it may take some time for app to open first time.

  • It is not acceptable for Garmin Golf not to work on Android tablets and chromebooks ....really. Its 2023. Can someone from Garmin tell us when you will provide this as this is totally unacceptable!

  • You can mirror or cast from your phone if you would like a larger display when viewing the Garmin Golf app.

Tablets lack specific services from iOS and Android needed in order for the Garmin Golf app to work properly. The Garmin Golf app also requires a consistent connection to data, which tablets are typically stuck requiring a wifi connection, without being able to use cellular when away from a WIFI network.

  • except it almost never works with the "constant connection" when on my phone.  I have tried to use this and the R10 on the course and driving range, even though my phone says it is connected to the R10 it almost never actually gets any shots.  I have it meticulously setup to be exactly 7 feet behind my shot directly and it doesn't work.  I clip my phone to my bag and when I go check it ALWAYS says that the R10 has "gone to sleep" and needs to be woken up.  This "constant connection" is a load of bs.  It should only need to connect to the device, there is absolutely zero reason it would ever need to connect to the internet for anything.

  • This is an inaccurate statement as I have a tablet that uses Verizon cellular service. Also on a side note is that I want to use the tablet in conjunction with the R10 and not on the course (have the watch for that).  And it also doesn't work on my Chrome book, which is basically just an oversized phone without voice service.  Please allow the app to be used on tablets and the user can understand it won't work in some cases without a valid internet connection

  • The accurate part of the of statement is in regards to tablets not being compatible or listed as a supported device on our end.

Info I mentioned above does not fall under every single tablet ever offered on the market, but it explaining that they are currently not supported.

There are no announcements regarding the option at this time, and there are options for using the R10 features on larger displays if desired.

If anything changes on the compatibility, users will be notified!

  • I just setup my R10 with the Awesome Golf app on my tablet and it works great.  I had to connect it to my phone to let the app log in but after that it didn't need it anymore.  I don't know why the Garmin App requires a constant data connection when there are other apps like Awesome Golf and GSPro on Windows that do not and work 100% with the R10.  I also noticed that the Awesome App stays connected to my R10 while the Garmin Golf app always disconnects.  Garmin Golf never records any shots, Awesome Golf has never had a problem recording shots from the R10.  I actually like the Garmin Golf app but it has so many problems.

I wish I could use it on the course to track my scores in conjunction with my Fenix 6X watch, CT10 sensors, and Approach Z82 range finder.  The thing is none of those work together, they all work independently of each other.  I hate to say it, but if this was something that was built by Apple you know they would all work together.  Once I start a game from my watch and try to open the golf app on my phone it doesn't recognize that I started a game on my watch and will only let me start a new round.  The same is true if I start from the golf app on my phone, my watch doesn't recognize that I started it from my phone and wants to start a new one on my watch.  Then the sensors are ridiculous and always adds phantom shots, or thinks that I am standing somewhere completely different.  My watch recorded an impossible shot once where is thought I was over a mile away and hit an absurd drive.  The CT10 sensors seem completely pointless, sometimes my watch makes a recommendation, most of the time it doesn't.  There is also no way to clear the message when it makes a recommendation.  Then, if I happen to walk past the hole on the green my watch automatically assumes that I must have made the putt and ends the hole and wants me to confirm the number of shots, which never matches what I am really doing.  Why do I even have the sensors if neither my watch or my phone is even taking them into account when measuring shots?  Especially putts?  If I haven't even hit my putter yet there is no way that I somehow finished the hole unless I got a hole in one.  Which again the watch and app should know which holes that would be possible on.  A par 5 500+ yard hole will never be a hole in one shot.
