Creating Courses/Routes/Track in Connect and Explore

I created a course in Garmin Explore on my iOS device, which synced to my watch flawlessly. But I realized that I had made some major errors in the course creation process, and wanted to make edits.
I find it very difficult to make edits.
  1. I can't seem to edit courses on the Garmin Explore app on my iOS device.
  2. Courses I created aren't showing up in Connect (web).
  3. Courses I created show up in Explore (web), but the only thing I can edit is the name. And the actual course doesn't display on the map.
I could use some help! It seems like there is some overlapping functionality between explore and connect, but also some gaps. The terminology is confusing (Course, Route, Track, what's the difference), and there are a lot of non-intuitive clicks and menus to be accessed to even get to routes.
Finally, my original problem was that I didn't create a circuit route, and I don't quite know how to do that, as it seems like I can only create a one-way track, as trying to add a final waypoint to my first one is impossible (only can delete it). All advice is welcome!
  • What kind of device are you using and what type of activity(ies) do you want to map?  Those answers will help give you guidance as to which application to use (Connect vs. Explore).

Absent that information, I'll try to help...

I can't seem to edit courses on the Garmin Explore app on my iOS device.

I'm on an Android and can edit a Course that I have previously created.  I'm sure the interfaces are different between the two OSs, but I can select the course from my library/collection then an Edit button shows up near the top right of the screen.  After selecting Edit, I can add course points or reposition existing course points, etc.

Courses I created aren't showing up in Connect (web).

They won't.  Two different work flows.  Connect is aimed towards fitness, Express; outdoor/back country devices.  It is a bit confusing.  Depending upon your course creating goals or activity types, Connect may be a better tool for you.  The Connect phone app and web app have similar functionality where Explore's features do differ a bit between the two platforms.

Courses I created show up in Explore (web), but the only thing I can edit is the name. And the actual course doesn't display on the map.

Explore web can only create Routes, not Courses.  Explore app can only create Courses, not Routes.  However, the Explore app can convert a Route to a Course and vise versa.  Course, Routes, and Tracks in the Garmin ecosphere are different ways to define a navigable "path".  The type of Garmin hardware (watch, inReach, handhelds) determines which "path" type to use.  Again, confusing.  This link might help a little bit: https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=v0rJAHy2hq3prHjRlxdRw5

  • I mostly run/trail run, also road cycle. I have a fenix 6 sapphire, may be getting an Edge head unit for the bike.

I did manage to figure out how to edit courses in the Explore app, but still feel a little limited. And I am not sure what I am doing is really optimal. What is the best way to create a navigable path for running on a fenix?

The Edge line is not compatible with Explore, so I'd gravitate towards the Connect tools.

Another thing I forgot to mention.  If you desire Turn-By-Turn alerts, Connect will include those instructions when downloaded to the fenix/Edge.  Explore will not (at least I don't get TBT instructions with Explore created Course).
