How to remove a device from Garmin Explore?

I have added my Zümo XT device to Garmini Explore (website). However, this application is not very useful for the XT (in fact, not useful at all, terrible user interface, very limited functionality...)

So, I want to remove this connection between the XT and Garmin Explore. I can't find how to do this.

Can someone help?

  • To remove the Zumo XT from the Garmin Explore Website, you have to go into your main Garmin account and remove the device there. This article has steps to remove the device from your Garmin account: Removing a Registered Product from an Account

Keep in mind that by removing it from your Garmin account, it will technically no longer be registered to you, but you can re-register it by adding it to Garmin Express. However, keep in mind that adding it to Garmin Express will add it back to the Explore website.

Unless you have a specific need for it to not appear on the Plans & Devices page of explore.garmin.com, you may want to leave the Zumo XT on your account and just not use it with the Explore Website.

If you need to remove the Zumo XT from the Explore App on your phone, you can do so by going to Devices > Select the Zumo XT > Select Remove.

  • Thank you for your answer! Removing the XT from my account is not exactly what I have in mind.... OK, what I want is not possible. Then I have a question on the XT itself. I will post this in the appropriate section.

I'd like to share how I use Garmin Explore with XT, without connecting my XT to Explore:

My XT is registered in Garmin Express, that way it is registered in Explore, but is not connected to Explore.

If your XT is already connected with Explore, unfortunately you need to make a full device reset, as there is no other way to remove the connection.

However, after a full device reset, XT will ask you to connect to Explore - do not connect to Explore, cancel this request (can always be done later, but not undone without reset).

With this setup, you can use Explore:

    • independently of XT - it does not synchronize
    • With Drive app
    • With Explore app
    • With Explore website

So what you can do to still exchange tracks/routes with XT is:

    • Load a gxp track (from PC, Web, Basecamp,...) into Explore, transfer via Explore app to Drive app to send to XT
    • Save a track or route on XT, send from XT to Drive app, from Drive app, you can send to Explore app.

This way you decide which tracks/routes you want to send from/to Explore from/to XT and does not automatically sync everything.

  • This is a great answer, thanks!

Full reset of the device was indeed the last option I had and you confirmed that this is indeed the solution.

I do not intend to use the Explore website or app at all, it is pretty useless for the XT. I download gpx files to the XT using the Drive app directly or via Basecamp.

  • You don't need to do a full reset of your XT.  Go to "Wireless Networks" in Settings, select the device that is running Drive, and forget that device.  On your phone running Drive, got to Settings for the XT, and "Forget Device".  You also want to forget the bluettooth connection in your phone's OS.  Then re-pair your XT with Drive on your phone.  This will establish a new connection with Explore disabled by default.  Just be sure to NOT enable Explore!

You can then use Drive to manually transfer data to the XT as psionic mentions.

  • Thank you for your help. I had to add an extra step. Only worked after I deleted all data/cache from the app drive.

  • To remove Explore from Zumo XT, this seems to work well....

Enter the Diagnostic menu. Long press the circular speedo from the View Map->Speed page (10 secs).

Select Developer Test & Tools -> Reset Explore Database

Nothing seems to happen, but immediately hold in the power button until the screen asks you turn off the XT.  Say yes.

    Let the XT restart.

No need to detach Drive or Bluetooth or anything else.  As long as you immediately cold start the XT, it will not re-connect to Explore.

Not in my experience anyway, and I have connected and disconnected lots of times.

  • I found that when I did this, Explore still synced the data from the Explore web site (or possibly via the Drive app) to my phone. Since the data handling on the XT is hopeless (as far as I can see there's no option to sync a single collection, it syncs the entire Explore database) I wanted to remove all the Explore data from the XT.

I tried the reset explore database, but it immediately re-synced. I removed the data in the end by unpairing my phone and forgetting the XT on the phone, on the XT forgetting the phone, then deleted the Drive app from the phone. I then reinstalled the Drive app from the App Store , re-paired the device to the Drive app, but skipped the step to enable Explore.

  • I found after a recent update that it was necessary to

Completely remove drive from the phone and reinstall it without permission to use explore

    And

reset the explore database from the hidden system configuration menu.

Previously it seemed to work without reinstalling drive

  • Had similar issue, on old Garmins I always use a Route for Navigation but display the track - works well for multi rider trips, as at some point all the Navs will want tyo go a different way at a roundabout (Garmin Starburst I think it is called)

Even my 345 and wifes almost identical 340 (both on latest maps / software / firmware with identical routing settings) would often want to take slightly different routes, so we had route for voice prompts and Via announcements such as lucnh stops, but track to ensure we stay on same path, and if we do get seperated or lost we can see exactly the route we should have taken.

XT had a "show on map" option for tracks as per my old device, so great, then I connected to Explore and immediately lost ability to display track on map - Aaargh!!!

Anyway, a reset later and it seems to be working again - but why does a sync to internet fundemantally change how the device works and break functionality - awful!

I keep all my routes organised in MRA, and can export from there direct to XT via Drive app, which is great as I no longer need to drag a laptop around Europe in case I need to edit a route, or pre-load 2 weeks worth of daily routes (often a "sunny route / showery route / biblical rain route) I can now have them all in MRA and just transfer as I need them.

I cannot see a way to remove the device from Explore, but think as long as I don't enter app on XT and ask to sync I should be OK.
