Downloading regional maps

I asked this in the wrong forum and someone helped me there but I still couldn't figure it out.  When I had Earthmate I could easily go in and go to a waypoint or some other landmark and select satellite view and up would come regional maps that I could just download.  And there a whole region would load...not just some minimal square.  Does Explore not do this?  If it does I certainly can't find it.  And worse...if it is satellite view...the area I can use to work with when the map is offline is tiny.  That was never the case with Earthmate.  Can someone help me with this?  Thank you.

  • Did you check the video that’s in the support article that I linked to in the reply to your other post? It (briefly) shows how to create offline maps. When you do that you get a view where you can select the area you want to download. You can just zoom in and out on this view by using two fingers on the screen (like any other mapping app works). The area in the bounding box will be downloaded as offline maps.

  • I did and thank you.  Question since I for some reason couldn't make this work.  Once you download the map and it's now offline...can you do the same to the downloaded map?  Meaning zoom in and out of it.  Only reason I ask is I couldn't make that happen while I'm sitting here at home.  I'm going to try it in the field tomorrow but regardless it's very different than how I did it in Earthmate.

  • I haven’t used Earthmate myself, but from what I read you need to download maps beforehand. With Explore that isn’t necessary as long as you have an internet connection. You can freely pan and zoom the map on the map view, and the app will stream the map data for the selected layers for the area you are viewing.

However if you know you will be visiting an area where there is no internet, you need to download the map layers for that area beforehand. This is called an Offline Map in Explore.

So create an offline map for the area you need as I explained in my previous post. Once you have done that you can use the map view for that area and the Explore app will show the map whether you have internet or not.

You can edit an offline map region, to do that go to the Offline Maps tab, and select the three dots on the tile you want to edit and select Edit. You can then change the selection of layers and the area you want to download.
