Garmin Explore iOS suppresses turn-by-turn when manual POI Course Points are added

Creating a route in Garmin Explore iOS and adding manual POI-type Course Points (e.g., Water, Summit, Food) results in a FIT export that contains only POI Course Points and no turn-by-turn Course Points (Left/Right/Straight). On the Garmin devices the route then shows only a breadcrumb line with no TBT prompts.

Expected behavior:

Route should include both:

  1. auto-generated TBT Course Points (Left/Right/Straight) and
  2. the manually added POI Course Points.

Comparison:

  • Garmin Connect (Web/iOS): works as expected (POI + TBT).
  • Strava → Garmin: works as expected (POI + TBT).
  • Garmin Explore iOS: no TBT when manual POI Course Points are present.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. In Garmin Explore iOS, create a route.
  2. Add 1–2 manual POI Course Points (e.g., Water).
  3. Save, sync to device, start the course → no turn-by-turn prompts.

Conclusion:

Likely a bug or missing generation of Left/Right/Straight Course Points in Explore iOS FIT output when POIs are added.

  • TBT on my Tactix 8 and Epix 2 with follow course setting and voice alerts enabled: they give voice announcements, vibrations and show on the screen when approaching a turn point or a course point.  On the screen the turn points are named eg.  by the name of the street. The problem which I wanted to point out here, is that when the course if made with GE IOS, any alert is for course points only. When the course is planned with GC or Strava, alerts are given for course points AND turn points. The alerts come when you are very close to the points. For walking ok, for cycling too late.

When course setting is "use map", the alerts are by vibration and ringing, not by voice. You see the named turn points on the screen. Then you don't have the up ahead screen and don't get alerts for course points. The alerts come approx 70 meters before the turn point and a 2nd alert 20 meters before. Fine for cycling. But you get unnecessary alters too. I get announcements for going straight. The comes possibly from open street map. Technically in OSM, when eg a surface is changing from lets say asphalt to cobble stone, it is a different way.

I am using Garmin Topo Active maps only. I am using outdoor maps+ also, but only for buildings, shadings, etc. but not the maps.

  • I loaded one of the in GE IOS created routes which does not give tbt alerts on wearables on my Garmin GPSMAP66. On the screen for active route I can see turn notifications and course points.

Probably it is in deed a problem of the wearables which don't give TBT alerts for in GE IOS created routes.
