new trail layers behaves like no layer

For planning a hike it may help to switch on the hiking popular layer and set the turn points accordingly. Now Garmin introduced this trail layers. It would be nice to plan a hike with it. However, when starting to create a course, this 'layer' disappears. It behaves like no layer but like recorded activities and imported gpx tracks. You can see them on the map, but once you start creating a course, the disappear from the map. Only saved waypoints are visible.

In fact, the new trail 'layer' is more a set of trails. I don't know if that are hiked trails by some individuals (like Komoot trails), ore if  that are officicia trails. But then, why are there so few? There are many more in my area. Why Garmin does not just take the waymarked trails which are free available in OSM, and not only for hiking but for cycling and MTB?

  • The new trails layer is part of Garmin Trails. It is unclear how Garmin has sourced these trails, but what is clear is that there are only trails for a limited amount of areas. It's already jokingly called Garmin NoTrails...

So it's not really for planning a hike but to search for predefined hikes and sync those to your Garmin device. A bit like AllTrails, except that AllTrails has recently introduced the ability to customize predefined trails in their new Peak subscription level. So once again Garmin is introducing something that is half baked and already behind competition (imho of course).

  • It is correct that Garmin Trails is different from other map layers. New trails in different regions will be added periodically. More information is available here: Garmin Explore App: Getting Started With Garmin Trails
