Wrong(?) direction shown in Explorer

Dear all,

I'm using a Garmin GPSMAP 65s and have created some waypoints pointing in different directions. The waypoints are setup in a simular way so I have N, E, S, W etc and at a distance of 2000 km. I use these waypoint when searching for lost people with my dogs to effectivly search sectors.

In the GPS it draws 2 lines, one thick pointing W in this case, and a thinner line pointing slightly to SW-ish. I have no idea where this second line comes from but maybe someone can explain? :)

On the explorer it shows the thinner line which in my case is the wrong direction so I can't use explorer in a good way. Can anyone figured out why, and is it possible to fix this?

Thank you.

  • As far as I know a waypoint itself does not have a direction? It is just a point on the map. The direction the arrow on the screen is pointing to comes from the direction the GPSMAP is pointing to.

The same for Explore, but here the direction can come either from the connected Garmin device or from the phone, depending on the Prefer Device Location setting.

As for the two lines (I only see one in the photo btw), the thicker magenta line is the navigation line, a thinner line is the track of the activity that’s currently being recorded. The default color is light blue I believe.

  • Thank you for your reply.
Sorry for not being clear. What I ment to say is that I created project waypoints pointing in different directions. In this case 270 degrees and 2000 km away.

    From the manual

    1. Select Waypoint Manager.
    2. Select a waypoint.
    3. Select MENU > Project Waypoint.
    4. Enter the bearing, and select Done.
    5. Select a unit of measure.
    6. Enter the distance, and select Done.
    7. Select Save.

It might be hard to see in the GPS picture but there is a thinner magenta line as well as the thicker one. It's pointing in some west-southwestern direction. This is the line that is shown in the explorer.

  • As far as I know projecting a waypoint is nothing more than creating a new waypoint by going from an existing one in a certain direction (bearing) for a certain distance. So the resulting waypoint is still a waypoint without a direction (because a waypoint does not have a direction).

As for the thinner magenta line on the 65s, isn't that just the default color of the current track log?
