Does Garmin Explore app allow us to import our own map in KMZ format?

I create my own KMZ files from old maps and other historical sources to explore historical sites. My KMZ files include images of custom topo maps, and I’m looking for an iPhone app that can properly display them.

Google Earth on iPhone does allow KMZ imports, but my files won’t load—likely due to certain unsupported features. Google Earth Pro on desktop handles them fine.

I imported my KMZ file into Garmin Explore, but nothing showed up on the map. I’m currently asking on the Garmin Explore forum to see if there’s a solution. Has anyone successfully imported KMZ files with map images into Garmin Explore, or found another iPhone app that supports this?

  • The Garmin Explore app does not support the importation of any third-party maps. You can import user data (tracks, waypoints, routes, etc.) in GPX format, but there is not a way to import KMZ files with map images.

  • Based on what others have experienced, Garmin Explore won’t display third‐party custom maps embedded in KMZ files. It only imports data like tracks, waypoints, and routes (typically via GPX), so custom map imagery isn’t supported on that platform
For your use‐case viewing KMZ files with custom topo map images on your iPhone you might consider alternative apps. For example, some users have successfully used Maps Plus on iOS to import and display custom maps with overlays.
Another option is Topo GPS, which supports importing various geodata formats (including KMZ) and might better handle your custom topo maps.
In summary, if Garmin Explore isn’t working for your KMZ map images, try an app like Maps Plus or Topo GPS for a more compatible experience on your iPhone.
