Tips on creating/editing courses with mixed on and off-trail sections?

I'm endeavoring to get more proficient with using courses created in Explore and synced to my 67i. Many of my hikes primarily follow established trails but include sections that leave trails (for example, cutoffs to connect with other trails, approaches to peaks, avoiding areas that are seasonally not navigable, etc). If I create and save a course in Explore that initially adheres to a trail but I then need to go back to add or edit a section for off-trail navigation, I get very unpredictable erratic behavior.

Many times, if I try to add or relocate a point, the course immediately jumps to a straight line (direct) path from some other point. This happens regardless of which map layers are enabled. Toggling the road/trail vs direct icon (the one that looks like glasses) on/off before adding or moving a point doesn't seem to help. Occasionally, on some courses, things behave, but most of the time things go wonky and I have to discard the changes to start over until I maybe get what I want.

Any suggestions?

  • Sorry but that just doesn’t make sense.

When you create a course in Explore app it is saved as a FIT file. A course FIT file contains all the coordinates of the path you created plus any course points. That FIT file gets copied to the GPSMAP.

On the GPSMAP when you load the course (FIT file) you can either choose to use the course as a track (direct path mode) or to have the course matched to the roads on your active map (Roads&Trails).

So how you create the course in Explore app is entirely separate from how the course is handled on the GPSMAP.

OP’s issue is that editing a course in Explore app leads to inconsistent results and a messed up course in the app. I have experienced exactly the same.

  • When you create a Course in the app or on the device, it is saved as a FIT file. You can change Course Navigation settings in the Setup Menu on the device and on the Map page in the app.  When you create a Course on the device, it doesn't ask you to choose direct path or Roads & Trails, it's part of the Setup, same as the app.

The problem here may or may not be related to this, but that's where I would start. The problem may just be one of Garmin's many glitches.

Note, I'm using a 66i, and using the 67i Owner's Manual for reference.

  • Did you try editing a course in Explore app yourself? Please do and report back your findings. If you do you’ll find out soon enough it doesn’t work very well.

  • I just tried it. There are problems relating to deleting points, but not adding. When deleting and then adding works okay if the "point to point" icon is greyed out.

You probably also have your "Course Navigation" set to "When Prompted" on your device which is why you get prompts. That doesn't mean Courses are handled entirely separate on the app and the device. The app just doesn't provide a "When Prompted" option.
