4.0.1 coursepoints (cue points) get messed up if you edit them using 4.0.1

Hi,

4.0.1 now recognizes and let you edit coursepoints (turns, warnings, directions etc) from a course with those that you have uploaded to your device (using usb cabe of course...) but after that all coursepoints will no longer be showed when viewing it on the device... what a shame...

I swear I can't understand Garmin!

GE accepts tracks, routes and COURSES but when creating a course it doesn't allow you to include coursepoints but wait, it reads previous created coursepoints but if you edit them they no longer work...

LOL

PS: it also don't show coursepoints on map screen... only waypoints .

  • I checked this out and did the following:

    1. creating a course with course points in Strave.

    2. The course is synced to Garmin Connect. The course points are visible with correct symbols (viewpoints, restaurants, etc.)

    3. When syncing Garmin explore, the course is in the app. It does not show course points. In the editing function the course points are shown as normal points, without the symbols from Strava/Connect. The course is on the device and shows the course points with correct symbols. On the up-ahead screen it shows the course points with correct symbols.

    4. When editing a course point in explore, because the symbols were not imported, the symbol is visible in explore. But this edited course point disappears on the device.

Actually you have the choice between

    a. importing a course with course points, don't edit them and knowing they are on the device.

    b. creating the course in Explore. Then the course points are in the app.and on the device.  Doing this is IMO not very convenient. I prefer first option.

I don't believe that this is a 4.0. problem. If I am not mistaken, I had the problems before and just didd not used  Explore for creating courses.

  • This seems indeed the same as it worked before the 4.0 update. It would be interesting to compare the different FIT files and how Course Points are represented in those files.

Course point editing could be improved in Explore app, for example I couldn’t find a way to add additional course points in an already created course.

Note that the symbols are not actually in the course file, but each course point has a type that determines the icon. The default type for a course point created in Explore app is a “shaping point”, and for shaping points both Explore app and devices do not show an icon nor include it in the up-ahead view.

  • Exactly.

in other words: we can’t count o GE to work with course points …

  • Strava/Connect. The course is on the device and shows the course points with correct symbols. On the up-ahead screen it shows the course points with correct symbols.

    Hi empe, Pls.

Are you saying that Connect is no longer messing with course points ?

If yes, I’ve missed that fix.

I still  only send my course with course points to my device copying it directly to the Garmin/NewFiles folder because Garmin Connect used to messed them all.

Do you know if this also works with RWGPS, Plotaroute, etc or is exclusive to Strava?

    thank you

PS: I've just done a test trying to send a .fit file directly to Garmin Connect and it still removed them all.

  • it read some months ago something that Strava can sync the course points to Garmin. I am not familiar with what is necessary that they can do it. It is something like they transfer now tcx format instead of gpx format. I tried it out and it works. Maybe with a premium account. I am not sure.

  • I found a workaround to show where the course points are.

Summerize of the problem. When you import a course with course points, eg. from Strive, they are not visible it the connect app, only on the device.  When editing a course point in the app , you get only this one course point, but the others disappear in the app and on the device.

A solution which works fine for me is:

import a course with course points

Select the course in the connect app.  You see the course without the course points. You could see them when you open the three dots menu and edit the course. DON'T do this.

When you select the course, is a menu point where you see the number of dots. Therein you see a list of dots. Choose the one which you want to see in the connect app,  In the three dots menu you can save it as a waypoint. Now you can see the "course point" in the app. I don't remember if this was available in 3.x or 4.0x. Maybe it is new.

  • I assume you are talking about the Explore app, not the Connect app?

Note that waypoints are not the same as course points. Waypoints exist independent of a Course. So you won't get for example the distance to them as part of your active Course. But it may work for certain use cases.

Are the points in your synced track called "Shaping Point x"? If so what you could try is to change the icon associated with that course point. That will change the type of the course point.

I don't know what Garmin device you use in combination with the Explore app, but the GPSMAP 67 for example considers shaping points as instructions when calculating the route of your course. These shaping points are not displayed on the map, nor are they showing in the active route page. If you change the icon of the shaping point, it will become a different kind of course point and the GPSMAP will show that on the map and in the active route page. So you could try that and see if it works.

  • Yes, I meant Garmin Explore.

I know the difference between Course Points and Waypoints. My message was just a reply to the thread opener who claims that course points are not visible in Garmin Explore or disappear if you edit them. My proposal is just a simple way how to show where the course points are hidden. I am using an Epix 2. With the up ahead function I see the course points and the distances to them.

I have no shaping points in my courses. As far as I know, they are created by basecamp, which I don't use.

  • Ah no problem, I think I just not fully understood your post and thought your advice was to create waypoints for the course points. And at the same time provide some additional info also for others reading this thread.

Btw, when you create a course in Explore app, the points you use to create the course are included as shaping points in the Course. So not only Basecamp uses them.

  • The point was not to see them on the Explore app but to be able to edit and/or create new coursepoints (cues) the same way you can using GC but in this case being offline.
