Offline Maps use how?

after some time, I set my 66i devices up and updated all software.

In the explore on the android, I can see the Offline Maps. I found out how to set an area and then the map is obviously downloaded and I can save it.

But how am I supposed to use it really?

  • What do you mean exactly? The offline map function in the Explore app means that you can use maps in the app without an internet connection. It does not relate to any maps on your GPSMAP 66i.

  • I have been wondering the same thing that skyeye asks but I have not had the chance to travel to an area without an internet connection to test it. So, it is the same functionality wise as the old version of Explore with just a different look? I must download any map I want to use before I travel to that area with no internet?  Thank you.

  • Yes that is the idea, you download  the map layers for a specific area. If you don't have an internet connection you can still view the maps of that area. You can easily test this by downloading the maps for your current location and then putting your phone in airplane mode.

  • well this sounds obvious, but when I mark and download and save a map segment, I can not see how to use it. When I go in the app to 'map', the most left tab, I can not see any map at all, just blue surface. And no, the map downloaded is not in the middle of the ocean

  • Strange then, I tested it on my phone before I posted my reply.

What map layers did you download, and what map layers do you have active in the map view? Maybe a different layer is downloaded than is displayed?

  • I left so far all defoult, topo was downloaded and saved. It seems to be also listed in the offline maps, but can not see how to use it

  • Sorry can't help you then, best contact Garmin Support about this issue.

  • Maybe this will help JungleJim. I am fairly sure this is what skyeye is talking about and this is what I am not understanding. I downloaded these maps. I/we can't see anyway to deploy/use these maps back on the main screen where we can see our activities and such on them. Where do we go from here? The only function I can seem to find is the edit map button. Thanks!

  • Thanks, but I know how the offline maps feature works, as it is working fine for me.

You don’t need to do anything after downloading maps for offline use. The app should just use them automatically.

But apparently that isn’t working for skyeye so that’s why I suggested to contact Garmin Support.

  • Ok thanks for your reply. That makes sense now. I will test with airplane mode as you suggested when I get a chance. I kind of got the impression that skyeye also didn't realize that the app will use the maps automatically. Thank you.
