Would like too see Two new features

First

when importing GPX files if a route has over 200 points the file is truncated and you lose some navigation data. It would be very handy that instead of losing this data we had the option to auto-convert the file to a course or track that can handle more points. In this way no data will be lost.

Second

In Garmin connect when creating courses you have the option to add waypoints along the route. For example a base camp or water station that may be 15 miles into a 30 mile trip. This would be a very handy feature to add to Explore. SInce it's already in the connect APP may even be able to borrow the code from your gamin connect co-workers.

Thanks looking forward to seeing future improvements.

  • Both would be great features.

It's very unlikely that Garmin will read it here. I suggest you submit it via their feature request form: https://www.garmin.com/en-US/forms/ideas/

Garmin Explore can actually already add waypoints. It adds waypoints everywhere you tab while you plan a course and additionaly when you long press anywhere on the course while you edit it. Then you can modify the points (name and icon) via the '3 dot menu'.

But i could not get the resulting waypoints to work properly on my Fenix 6x. They show up on the map, but there are no alarms when reaching a waypoint and the 'next waypoint' data field only shows the first waypoint and distance to the end of the course. But maybe you have more luck.

  • Thanks ill definitely use the form!

From what i can tell yes you can add waypoints as in a single waypoint on a map (separate from any course file) then upload them to your watch. But you cannot add a waypoint as part of a course ( eg in the course file that is uploaded to the watch). That's why i think the Fenix 6 doesn't show the distance until the next waypoint. With the connect app you add waypoints onto the actual course and is saved with the course data (course and waypoint position in one file). Although i haven't tried it personally yet I believe the next waypoint feature will work much better with the waypoint being part of the actual course.

  • I am sure the points are part of the course, because i only moved this one single course to my synced collection (and no individual waypoints) and they show up on the map on the watch. They just do not behave as real waypoints (as described above) for some reason.

Yesterday I also wrote to Garmin support what could be wrong. Let's see if they can shed some light on it.

  • So what I found (and this is for my instinct 2) is when creating courses with waypoints in garmin connect they do show up as I approach that point. It will say Point of interest in 300 ft and count down distance until I arrive at this point. Again, this is only with connect. With Garmin explorer i cannot add points to a course as far as I'm aware. But I did find another option. If you had waypoints individually through garmin explorer you can set alerts for the activity that will alert when you approach these points.

  • Thanks for sharing. I thought that I had tried that already. But I will give it another try. Maybe I did something wrong. How is the setting called on your instinct that alerts you on upcoming waypoints?

  • I was in contact with Garmin support about the waypoint topic. I asked specifically if it is possible to add waypoints via Garmin Explore that are then displayed on the data screen for next waypoint and distance to next. The disappointing answer was that it is not possible.

They wrote that the only possiblity is to create the route directly on the watch. I tested it and not even that was working. It showed distance but not the name of the waypoint. So also useless...

I wonder why they added the data screens without providing any reasonable way to use them.

At least it works well using 3rd party software like locus map or plotaroute.
