A quick thumbs up to the Explore team

Hi!

While it's still really a shame I cannot export or import GPX waypoints and tracks without Google Play Services enabled (which I don't use) and a standing online connection to Garmin's cloud (which I also don't use), I did want to say...

...that I am really happy with the 'snap to' routing function that has been integrated into Explore version 3 upwards. It's very good! I can quickly tap together a new route wherever I am, grab the route anywhere to push it around and try a different way in the middle, view the elevation profile and quickly upload it to my Instinct Solar.

This is great! Thank you very much!

P.S.: I was reading Google Play reviews on this app. I think it's really become better over the years, and I also think it's great that the friendly C.N. from Garmin actually responded to some of the reviews. Again, this app has really improved - actually, the only thing that's missing for me is export and import of tracks and waypoints via the normal file system, without Google Play Services or Garmin's cloud. Because I really like to hike, but I don't want to share all my data with the world.

  • Yes, indeed, great update.

    without Google Play Services

You do not need to download the software from Google Play nor do you need Google Play on your Android device.
There are plenty of ways to use Andoid without Google.
I use Lineage OS for example without Google contact.
    Everything works flawlessly.

Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, I usually would be the typical Lineage OS user with Google Services spoofing. However, I have a keyboarded Android Blackberry with a locked bootloader. I use it with sideloaded apps, which have been scanned with Virustotal and Malwarebytes.

In that constellation, even if I turn on Play Services with the mobile connection disabled, import on Explore isn't even offered as an option, and export for example with Total Commander only yields a GPX-file with zero bytes.

And with Play Services off, but mobile connection enabled, the same. Google Services online is a total no-go for me.

Any idea what I could try? Am I missing something?

  • As for the App and the connection to the Google Playstore, I don't get your hopes up.
But Garmin itself has at least not integrated a Google Map in Explore. That is already a good start.
In contrast, Google Map is unfortunately still mandatory linked with the Conneqt APP. That's why I can't see the map in this APP. But it does not bother me.
But there I am full of hope that soon a variant with OSM appears.
