The application would be more interesting if I could add urls for background tiles or layers. And it would be even better if there was an option to download the tiles for offline use.
I know I'm dreaming but it would stop using multiple applications.

  • Totally agree. Custom maps in img Format would also be great. But I would already be satisfied if Garmin harmonized and updated its map material. Currently it is very annoying because:

    • Garmin Watch uses Topoactive maps. OSM source material for the December 2021 update is already several months old, so new trails are not included.
    • Garmin Connect uses Google maps, which is completely useless for most outdoor activities because it does not show trails at all. But for routing, it uses more recent data from OSM, so it routes on ways that are not displayed on the Google map at all, which is strange.
    • Garmin Explore also uses Topoactive maps, but much older ones compared to the watch. They are at least 1 year old. So routing on new tracks will not be possible using the Explore app.

So all in all quite a mess.

  • I agree, after the background and the rendering is depending on the use.

  • Garmin Connect Web uses your choice of Google Maps, OpenStreetMaps or HERE maps.  Google Maps does have trails, but it depends a lot on the area. OSM (and thus also TopoActive that is based on OSM) generally does show more trails.

My guess is that we'll eventually see them move to TopoActive for everything, at least in some reasons. Explore made that change recently, as have the devices - I'd expect Connect will be next.

  • True. OSM in GC web is possible and works well. But you will need at least a tablet. On a phone the UI is unusable.

But that reminds me of yet another map inconsistency:

    • GC Mobile: Google Maps
    • GC web: Google Maps, Here or OSM
    • Garmin Live Track: Google, Here, Baidu

I hope you are right with your theory that they will move to Topoactive on all services. And then, hopefully update their maps once in a while Smile.
