How is the 40km PR calculated

Hello everyone,

I was wondering how is the "40km" personal best calculated.
There is an obvious difference of speed between a 40km down hill or a 40km climb ...
So is it the best speed in a "solid" segment of 40km with the same altitude of start and end anywhere in a ride?

There is no explanation anywhere of what it is ...

Thanks,
Dav

40 km PR would be a sprint on the flat!

    Hi Martin,

    Thanks for that.
I would also think so, but I'm actually living in an area where there is no flat space.
All my rides have altitude difference, few hundred meters at least.

In other words, the 40km PR would be blank. But it's actually working.
My latest 40km PR has been set in a 64km ride. Here is the link :
    https://connect.garmin.com/activity/868879985

You'll see that there is no flat. At best, in a 40km segment there is at least 500m of denivelle + and -

So it seems that it takes a segment of 40km with the same altitude at the start and at the end. And after it's up to you to find the flatest part ...

    Hi everyone,

I checked it out last WE and the 40km PR is actually badly (IMO) calculated.
It took the first 40km of my ride which was basically a ride down a valley with an altitude difference of 800m.
It means it only takes the fastest 40km segment it will find in your ride. The altitude difference is not taken in account unfortunately ... so it's not really a very useful PR.

You just have to find the steepest 40km DH you can find and you'll score :-)

If there is anyone at Garmin reading these threads : Please correct it so the 40km PR is only registered when altitude difference between start and end is within a +/-50m - so it makes it comparable.

    Cheers
